This morning, however, after a late trivia night at the Legion (we won), I'm going for Peet's Major Dickason's Blend coffee. I need the boost. |

Bruichladdich Scottish Barley, The Laddie Classic. This is your basic Bruichladdich, an Islay single malt with an almost floral character, and only a moderate amount of peat. Not up to their Port Charlotte bottling, much less the Octomore. But less expensive, and quite respectable.

A sort of generic pu erh, just to try the flavor. It's not what I was expecting and I wasn't sure I liked the first few sips. Half through the cup, though, it may be one of the most delicious teas I've tasted.

Last tea for the day, out on the west-facing deck, about 15 minutes from sunset.

Rocking a cup of Sencha this morning. I hope everyone had a good weekend. I know we did. Little Man confirmed that with a 6:15 AM wake up because he was sad and didn't like school. That is his code for "I had too much fun with you and Dad and I don't want to not spend the day with you." I have yet to find a way to explain the importance of money to my soon to be 4 year old and why his Mom and Dad are not home 24/7.
Teavana also has a Darjeeling that I have been enjoying. Interestingly enough, the directions call for water at 195. I think I might have been using the wrong temp on my past Darjeelings. I am going to have to pick up a few more for experimentation. |

So, what kind of Darjeeling is it, and what temperature had you been using? I find 195 about perfect for good quality second flush Darjheelings, and somewhere closer to 185-195 better for first flush. OTOH, things called Darjheeling in grocery store tea bags are ghastly at any temp, but best at 205-212. The variation in flavour profiles across First Flush Darjheelings is quite remarkable, so if you try one and aren't impressed, consider trying a different one. Currently, I'm enjoying a Margaret's Hope from last year, brewing at 190 for 3 minutes. Makes a lovely "green" tea with my lunch. This morning, drinking Murchies English Breakfast |

Darjeeling de Triomphe
I had been buying Darjeelings from Tea Gschwender and brewing them, per their instructions, at 205. I had about four or five that I tried. A few First flush and the rest second flush. Camels Breath this afternoon |

That's a good thought, Deb. But he's 30+ Lbs (very large for a Cavalier). The problem isn't carrying him (I sling him up high enough for no issues there), but getting him up off the floor into my arms. And since I only need to do this to get him up the stairs, and not every time...
@ProfCrash: Yeah, I've seen that recommendation, and rarely found it to be optimal. Drinking Murchie's English Afternoon. Brewed at 212F, for three minutes, to see which way that drives the maltiness I'd like to control a bit. (I expect it to go the wrong way, but want to confirm that.) |
