I just took my first walk in my new shoes. Very comfy. I kind of felt like I was in "The Red Shoes", though. Every step I took propelled me into the next step, almost without me thinking about it. Up hills, down hills, it didn't matter -- it was almost hard to change pace. In fact, I was only going to go around a couple of blocks to begin with, until I've broken them in, but I ended up going about 2 1/2 miles. These are the closest thing to automatic shoes that I've ever had.

I'm incredibly nervous and scared right now. Tomorrow morning I'm going to the dentist for the first time in years. After a very bad experience with my dentist I never went again but a little while back one of my fillings came out and I gather up my courage and found a new dentist practice (my old dentist has recently retired but I just want to avoid that practice) and made an appointment.
I never thought that that bad experience left such an impression on me that I'm actually scared to go now. I know that, besides the filling, quite some things need to be done. Personally I wouldn't mind it if they tell me I need to get dentures! My teeth never looked nice, missing some in my upper jaw (never had them) and not enough space in my lower jaw (probably also the cause of some current problems). I'm not expecting to get much sleep tonight. |

Listen... both of you...
There is no reason to fear the 'dentist.' It's the 'person' who's causing you the problems, not the work. When you buy a dress, you don't only visit one store and settle for what ever they have, do you? No, you try a few different stores to locate what you are happy with. It's the same with doctors and dentists, lawyers and chefs! My father was an oral surgeon. He did all my dentistry when I was a kid. AND I HATED GOING TO THE DENTIST! He was skilled, but he had a very heavy hand. But after moving away as an adult I discovered that dentistry didn't have to be painful. I found gentle dentists who's sessions, while not 'fun,' at least were not torture! I still have to 'shop' for good care, but now I've found a gentle AND skilled dentist, and a doctor and hospital that I'm satisfied with, even a lawyer that I think isn't trying to pad his bank account with my money. My dentist is more worried about causing pain than I am to experience it. I like that in a dentist! Shop for medical care the same way you shop for everything; do NOT settle for less than what you want! Stitchawl Last edited by Stitchawl; 10-12-2011 at 10:23 PM. |

I know that I shouldn't be afraid, that my new dentist is probably a very nice person but that doesn't take away my fear and nervousness. Amongst other things, my old dentist was also very heavy handed and lacked people skills. This literally caused me so much pain the last time I went I was sick for two days. I know I wasn't the only person who had problems with him, when he retired there were several lawsuits between him and his old practice.
I tried several times to switch to another dentist in the same practice but they didn't do that. There's a shortage of dentists in my area and many don't take on new patients. I called them again yesterday but they had de-registered me and had even destroyed my file. They say they had sent letters to all the patients of my old dentist that before a certain date they had to contact them otherwise they would be removed from their list and their files would be destroyed. I never got the letter. I couldn't re-register but the nice receptionist tipped me there was a new dentist practice that was taking on new patients. Apparently my last experience made a big impression on my mother, too. I can vaguely remember her being very angry about what happened last time. Last night she insisted that she was going with me and wait for me in the waiting room. I did sleep surprisingly well last night. |

Rumpelteazer - Take comfort in the fact (if you can) that you're not the first - or the last - person to be nervous about going to the dentist. In my area there's a big market for dentists who offer a gentle kind of sedation for patients, to make it easier for them - and that's just for routine things like cleaning. If I were you I'd mention to your dentist that you're really nervous because you haven't been in a while and you've had some bad experiences with dentists in the past, and if he or she is good they'll be quick to put you at ease and let you know everything they're doing while they do it.
Best of luck to you ![]() |

Right now I'm going to try to go back to sleep. Nervous about a job interview today and having a difficult time putting my mind to rest.

I just came back from the dentist.
He's very nice and after I explained what had happened the last time he told me he could understand why I was nervous and reassured me that he believes in good pain relief and that if an anaesthetic doesn't work he'll book a new appointment and the next time tries to anaesthetise it differently. As expected some work needs to be done but not as much as I feared. Next week I'm getting a root canal on the tooth that has lost its filling. Also both of my lower wisdom teeth needs to come out, not because they are rotten but because they're just "not right". I'm glad about that, I knew those wisdom teeth weren't right and I had asked my old dentist about removal but he didn't think that was necessary. I know I'm going to be nervous next week, but I won't be scared like today. |

After those two were taken out I had a lot less problems with jaw pain and ear problems. I still have lower jaw pain occasionally, especially when I'm stressed) so I'm very happy they're going to be taken out and hopefully that will be the next thing that's going to be done after the root canal. He was very careful to break the news about the extractions and gave me the choice to have him do it or have them extracted surgically. I opted for the first choice, I trust him enough the believe it when he says he can do it. As I said, I'm not afraid of some pain, the main problem with my old dentist was that he didn't communicate, didn't have any people skills and that after several incidents I didn't trust him any more. Also, my new dentist is quite cute, which also helps ![]() |

Amazed that Meat Loaf's new album Hell in a Handbasket has recently been released in Australia and New Zealand (I think), because he's going on tour there, but in the rest in the world it won't be released until February. IMHO he/the record company is asking for the album to be pirated!
