Right now, I think we're pretty safe. The newest typhoon spawning in the Asia waters seems to be headed due west towards the Philippines. We're under no threats today. Other than rain, that is, and Fig Newton deprivation.

Drinking cold Coke Zero, as we have a few days of unseasonably warm weather in the UK.

Rather fortunately warm weather in my case, as our central heating boiler is now defunct, and we have to get it replaced.

Yuck, that happened to me last year, 2 months with no heating. Fortunately the autumn was pretty mild. I hope that's the case for you too.

I though English houses had big fireplaces where you could roast a side of Ox. At least that's what they show in the Robin Hood movies...

Not mid-victorian end-terraces.... although there are working fireplaces in two rooms downstairs and in one bedroom, so in dire need we wouldn't freeze. And as we are not without electricity, so we have hot water from an immersion heater if we want.

So being without the boiler isn't a major problem. Just more expense than I want right now, and more hassle. It should all be working again within the month, I hope.

In most areas that I'm familiar with, electricity is the most expensive form of home heating and most folks try to avoid it if they can. Is that the case in the U.K. as well?

We have a wall-mounted aircon/heater unit that get's complimented with a DeLonghi Oil-filled electric radiator in mid winter. These keep the living room/kitchen/bedroom at a comfortable level year round for about $200 US per month, which I think is pretty low. In Vermont, heating with electricity can run about $800 a month for five winter months...

Yes, indeed, electric heating is the most expensive here too. Gas-fired central heating is the usual choice in the UK, usually natural gas (mostly methane) from the North Sea/elsewhere.

I've just opened another Coke Zero.

Today I found out that having an ear infection can be a good thing. Apparently from around 8am until 10.30am there was a helicopter hovering over our inner city waking everybody up. I was sleeping on my good ear and I didn't hear a thing!

I'm now setting up my new Logitech Squeezebox Radio.

Hmm... I think I'll make some mint tea (or maybe I'll try out the new chocolate mint black tea that I've bought) and then pamper the crap out of myself. I've had a pretty terrible month, so I figure I should give myself some well needed rest and relaxation. I've got some great books on the go, and a few t.v. shows that I've been meaning to catch up on.

In France, the price of electricity is set artificially low in order to incite people to install electric heating and consume our mostly nuclear electricity. I think it's still more expensive than other types though, but since it has other advantages (no boiler or heater to maintain) there are many homes with electric heating, especially apartments. With the strange result that in peak periods (unusually cold weather), the nuclear plants, which are not notable for their adaptability, cannot supply enough power, so we have to import electricity or produce it with highly polluting coal or oil fuel plants.

As we say in Thai.... "Same, same. But different."

Same idea, very different taste. NOTHING tastes like a Fig Newton. Just like nothing comes close to the taste of an Oreo cookie even if it looks the same.
