Oh, well done. That seems to be a very modest amount of book buying in 2014.

Well, I didn't think my spending limits would bite quite so quickly.

Counting my subscriptions, due in later this month, I've already spent just over half my January budget: £12.56 to be exact.

Now, the next Baen Monthly bundle has three books in it that I definitely want to buy. They're non-bundle cost would is $26, the bundle costs $18 (about £12). So that's a 30% discount. Now once they're published, they are couponable at Kobo, but at Kobo (due to exchange rates and VAT) the three books I definitely want would cost £19.40. So I'd need a 38% (say 40%) discount to match the Baen Bundle price. Of course, buying the bundle also gets me two other books that look rather interesting. But then, it's possible that the next Kobo competition could have better odds, and I might end up with three 75% off codes, which would mean the books I wanted cost only £4.85!

I think I've persuaded myself. It's better to wait and hope that I can get the books I want from Kobo with a high discount code, than to buy the bundle and blow the rest of my month's budget before we're even half way through the month!

Whew!

Hmmm. I didn't see three in there that were "must haves". (We are talking about February's Bundle, right?) So I wasn't tempted. But I admit, if I did have three, I'd definitely go for the bundle. Or, frankly, two must haves and a couple of "interestings". But then I admit to having a strong preference for buying the bundle when I can, since I've discovered enough authors through them to make it worth the slight extra cost. (And I always have more than enough uses for good coupons without adding these in.)

Castaway Planet, Cobra Outlaw and The Complete Compleat Enchanter for me. (I already have Cauldron of Ghosts and The Sea Without a Shore.) The anthology of time travel stories looks fun, and I'd be willing to give the Dean Ing a go.

But I'm going to get them at Kobo with discount codes. It's really only the Castaway Planet one that I want right now.

Yup, that was the only one that qualified as right now. Though I've got one book and three audio books on pre-order that are coming in this week, so NOTHING is "right now". I'll have to read them first! Plus I have 10 KU books out, so those also really should come first (but probably won't.)

Oh, well, see, I cheated. I bought the February bundle before the end of the year since I had already blown my budget. However, I used accumulation from my micropay account, so that helped. So far this year (and it's only 5 days, so don't get too excited), I used one of my Audible credits and acquired some free items at various places. I've never bought anything at Graphic Audio, so got a free item to see if I like their recordings. Otherwise, I'm just resisting trolling my usual haunts to keep me from spending.

I finally started one book that I already own today! I have a couple of other Baen books to start this month - if I like them, then I can add more of the series to my wishlist for Kobo Coupons. Nothing else on my current wishlist is couponable (and I got poor coupons anyway this last time out, so just as well).

Going to buy a book tonight which I'll read right away (Brandon Sanderson's Firefight) and then I'm going to stop buying and just read what I've got. We'll see how long that lasts! Hopefully I'll last until spring/summer. I've got enough for the winter, or 10 winters...lol.

I realized in October that i'd spent **way** too much on amazon daily deals, thinking "it's just 2 bucks". So i started reading this thread, and am I'm seeing progess. I still look at the daily deals, but am Much more selective than i used to be.

I feel a bit hypocritical setting a budget for 2015, because i just dropped a bundle on the full stack of Liaden books, based on the fun i had reading the first omnibus on the holidays. ......however, i'm a slow reader, and intend to read the full series next. So i'm going to try to limit myself to $10 per month, until i've read the full virtual stack of them.

There, i've made a commitment in black and white

Edit: (Whoops - i've remembered that over Christmas i also bought a bunch of Elizabeth Peters which were on sale for $3 each, and a whack of Ed McBains, also on sale, and a stack of......you get the picture. So i really have no self-control. And i need to turn over a new leaf this year.

I think it is no accident that "leaf" is a synonym for "page."

Well, after three years of using this thread to identify new series/authors you should buy, I'm glad to see that you're now using it for the intended purpose.

$10/month is a tight book buying budget (IMO), best of luck!

I peruse every thread hoping to find something new to buy and read.
That's why I am always disappointed when someone does not list the books they are posting about. Now I wonder who I could be referring to?

Bought my first e-book of the year - it was a deal, but a book I've been coveting for a long time - The Moomins and the Great Flood. It shouldn't take me too long to read : I'm doing quite well this month so far. I've avoided a few Daily Deals and low-priced recommendations.

On your wish list and a good deal. Sounds like an ideal candidate for a purchase.

I must try to be more ruthless about my choices. As I'm not going to get this month's Baen ebooks from Kobo at a discount (I hope), I think I might only buy the one I want most. There are several others on my wish list that I want more than the other two in the bundle that I was particularly keen on.

I have less than £12.50 left in my budget for this month. I must spend it wisely!

Well, I succumbed. My first two books of 2015 - one a pre-order, and the other also a favourite author and favourite series. Plus two other pre-orders of Audible books, though those really count against my December behaviour and costs, since they were charged then. I really could have held off on the Ian Hamilton Ava Lee book, since I'm hardly short of stuff to read, but I justified it to myself by using a Kobo coupon (a mere 35%, but it all helps.)

Sigh. OK, tighten up. Take a deep breath and remember that these were at least minimally within the guidelines. (And like Paul, I'm only going to buy that one book in the February bundle for sure. The others can wait.)
