We're in day 2 of a "Boil Water Advisory." A large water main in our little city broke late Monday, and they spent most of the day yesterday, and into last night, working on it. Anytime water pressure gets too low in the city water we have to boil our drinking water until they've finished the mandatory 24 hour testing for bacteria. I bought drinking water for my mom so she wouldn't have to mess with the boiling, and ended up bringing some of it home with me. I don't normally buy bottled water -- our water is very good here and it seems wasteful -- but it is SO much easier to just use it for now instead of boiling. Yes, I'm lazy.

Give some thought to the water purification tablets that are sold in camping stores. The better ones have no taste and kill off all the nasties. No need to boil. Another good alternative is 'activated Oxygen' liquid, also sold in many camping stores. This too kills off anything in the water without being harmful to you, or imparting bad taste to the water. Boiling is a bother. Dropping some tablets or drops into the water is easy and effective.

We used to put some of this

in our boat water tanks if we took on 'sus' water.

The taste changes, but if you leave a glass of it on the bench for an hour or so before drinking the worst of the yuk taste goes.

A couple of drops of household bleach or iodine work well... Great in an emergency situation, and they do change the taste. BUT.... ordinary chewable Vit C tabs remove most of that bad taste!

I found that the activated O2 drops have no taste, and if you overuse it, the only taste is a bit salty.

I would rather make tea. It is usually the Chinese quarter that survives the bad water best because they are always boiling it to make tea.
