Hmm, the pdf is the smallest of the lot... Running the epub through the calibre converter got it down to 1.2 MB

The multiple stylesheets are likely the result of doing a quick compilation of separate ebooks into one omnibus. The prior Tor.com collections have the same issue, and upon looking, each story in each of those is tucked away into its own handy folder… meaning, were one so inclined, it would be pretty easy to decompile those collections back into the individual story ebooks.

I appreciate that flexibility, even as I acknowledge that I generally prefer a cleaner, optimized end product.

One thing that I find useful is Calibre. I put the 40.1 MB kindle file in Calibre, clicked on convert (to Mobi) and a new copy of the same book is created that is only 8.7 MB in size. Still not the smallest book but a lot better than 40.1 MB!

But converting to Mobi loses more modern formatting choices.
I would rather spend an hour (for the amount of content), and normalize the common styles (clean, then Combine Identical styles into a base sheet) Odd, this is exactly what a 'house' stylesheet was to prevent. Very sloppy coders fail to properly use House rules.

True, but for those of us who aren't technically capable, Calibre does a lot of fixing. I would suggest azw3 instead of mobi though for your kindle.

From what I can tell calibre fixes most of the issues and merges the stylesheets. The body text styles were the same with the exception of one book which used the wrong text size (the indented text were smaller than the non-indented in book 7, I doubt that's intentional).

I'll echo the advice of others, use epub->epub conversion or epub->azw3 for Kindles, and select a suitable output profile under page setup to scale down the images. On the other hand, I tried the original and it worked fine, I didn't notice it being unusually slow or anything on my Kobo Clara .

IMHO, I find that having multiple stylesheets is just plain frigging lazy and there's no excuse for it.
