Yarn porn!!! OMG I love it.

I'm gloating over my new Fiestaware place setting in Sunflower. Got one of the Gusto (what Fiesta calls big chili/soup bowls) bowls, also in Sunflower. Kohl's was having a sale and Chris spoiled me with them . So I now have four complete place settings (Peacock, Lemongrass, Tangerine and Sunflower). Next up is Gusto bowls in the three colors I already have .
Waiting for tea to steep so I can make iced tea.
Wondering if Steph at our local furniture place is going to find the fridge we want at a price we can afford... we gave her the model number, now to see what price they can come up with for it.

I'm really glad to see that people can get excited about plates and bowls. I don't understand it, but I can appreciate that people do. For me, paper plates are fine. I'm just as comfortable using a banana leaf as a plate, and do so 50% of the time we eat at food stalls around South East Asia. I just don't 'get' fancy dinnerware.

My mother left us a complete 12 place-setting set of Royal Copenhagen plus the various serving platters, dishes, and tureens. when she passed away. She loved to throw formal dinner parties. Having no desire for it ourselves, we gave it to my son and his future wife. (She actually has a Wedding Registry! ) I think they will get more enjoyment from it than I would.

A classic case of 'pearls before swine,' I guess...

Possibly it's a female thing, hon. Anyway, I wouldn't expect you to get excited over plates and bowls, given your lifestyle anyway. Where would you put fancy dinnerware in a home with no cabinets and a tiny kitchen? I don't throw formal dinner parties either, but Fiestaware isn't "fancy" stuff (although you couldn't tell by the prices, LOL). I just like pretty dishes. And I can justify liking pretty dishes if they actually happen to be useful as well .

Oddly enough, almost EVERY Japanese house has one of these! Usually it's too big for the kitchen so it's in the eating area or living space, but it's there to hold the dishes. The Japanese use a LOT of dishes during a meal. Often, each item get's its own plate or bowl, the color, shape, size, and pattern of which are chosen to complement the particular food placed on them. For just the two of us, a typical Japanese dinner might use 8-12 different plates and bowls. No common pattern or theme for them either. As I said, the color and/or pattern on it is chosen for the food to be served. If my wife is serving dinner, it looks like this. If I'm doing the serving it looks like this...

LOL alrightey then! Well, come to think of it, you see all this gorgeous painted Japanese china, so I guess they'd have to put it somewhere. I didn't think about that. But yeah, I'm displaying my Fiestaware stuff too, LOL.

From the yarn catalogue:

One of my favorite places to buy yarn is Colourmart. He builds the cost of shipping into the cost of the yarn, so you know exactly what you're going to pay. He does lots of international business -- from his website: all the prices shown include posting Small Packet Airmail to anywhere, worldwide, which normally takes about 1 week, though can be longer. The prices also include VAT for any EU customer.

I've got quite a stash from Colourmart.
Thank you both. It seems that knitting is more expensive than I thought it would be. Going to see next week if I can order some more of the wool I bought for my scarf.

Sadly, that's true. Knitting is a surprisingly expensive hobby. And one of the problems is that good wool is actually much easier to knit with than inexpensive acrylics, because it has such natural elasticity. People who have been knitting for a long time tend to have built up a stash (sales, trading with friends, etc.) so we don't notice the prices quite as much.

Post pics of your scarf when you finish it!

It's one of those things that really smack us in the head when we first arrive in Japan... We walk into a Japanese home and find a very western style LARGE cupboard overloaded with plates, bowls, cups, etc.! That, and that 'usually' nothing is sold in packs of four. If you buy glass ware or tea cups, you get sets of three or five. Can't buy a 'dozen' eggs either! Four, six, or ten!

Bianca, you need to start at the beginning of the consumer chain if you really want to save money. The Yarn retailer adds in his profit. The Yarn wholesaler adds in his profit. The Woolen mill spinning the yarn has to add in its profit, etc., etc., etc.

I suggest you buy a sheep...

We have friends in the hinterland with alpaca. Including one called Diesel who is almost a house-pet, should he see the door open.

Yes! Yes! Another good source of wool, though probably just as difficult to housebreak. How about Guinna Pig fur? And if you get bored with the knitting you can always eat them. They are a staple of the Peruvian diet.

You're joking, right. I'm the boss. I'm the Head of the House. I know exactly where I stand and my wife knows exactly who's in charge. She would NEVER dare to tell me which sponge I should use to wash the dishes. NEVER!

Spoiler:
(If I cook, she washes. If she cooks, I wash. Fortunately I love to cook and she hates to! She's a great cook, but she doesn't really enjoy it, and only cooks Japanese foods. I cook many different cuisines. )

Very democratic, and exactly the same in our household. Though we are trying (pretty unsuccessfully) to get the kids to do the washing up bit...

Right now I'm letting my sardines on toast go down before I brave the lawn mower.
