I've never been asked to remove mine. I wouldn't unless you were specifically asked to -- it's more likely to be lost at the checkpoint.

The FAA permits airlines to allow the use of most PEDs on planes if the airlines have performed the appropriate tests (whatever they are) to certify that they are safe. Note, however, that the default position is that they are not allowed; they are only allowed if the airline takes certain steps to permit them.

Cell phones are different - because they can reach so many towers from the air, the FCC (different agency) prohibits them from being used in the air, regardless of what they might do or not do to the plane.

And one airline (I think SW) said that it wasn't interested in permitting cell phones on flights because passenger surveys have suggested that they wouldn't like being next to a passenger who was chatting on the phone the whole flight.

Note that - since airlines have to go to some trouble to certify the use of PEDs on planes - the fact that they can charge for wireless gives them a pretty good incentive to do whatever it is they need to do.

on one of my recent flights, going through the screening area the TSA folks said; "remove anything smaller than a Kindle (specifically used the term Kindle), from your carry ons". I've flown 5 or 6 times since then and always used that as guidance. laptop gets pulled out, Kindle stays in

Whenever possible, I avoid air travel. It's just too much of a hassle. If I can drive to my destination, I will do so.

I just flew across the U.S. last week for a conference, and security did not ask me to remove my reader from my bag. I just chucked my whole bag into one of those gray bins and sent it through the machine.

However, on the flight the attendants specifically said to "turn of all electronic devices, including Kindles" during ascent and descent. I hadn't run into that previously, but I also haven't flown anywhere in about a year.

The reason they include e-readers in that directive isn't so much that they're dangerous, as if the FAA start making exceptions, the crew would be playing referee on whether something qualifies. For what it's worth, the woman in front of me had her (loud, leaking!) Shuffle going the entire descent and landing; we did not crash.

The size directive I heard for security was "portable DVD player (at your seat) - okay inside, ones intended to be hooked to a TV to watch - outside!" It is my understanding that a couple of years ago the desk-jockeys in DC (you know, the folks who've never worked two seconds at an actual airport) were all set to insist that every single electronic item be outside one's bag through the x-ray, but the airport staff, knowing that would mean: a) lots more lost (left behind) electronics, b) slower scan times per bag, and c) even more pissed off passengers than they had on their hands already, more-or-less said they'd refuse to enforce something so unenforceable, so it was yanked at the very last minute.

EB600 apparently died because of airport scanner

Hello from newbie. The reason my EB600 died I guess it is that it went through the airport scanner. I had it in my bag. It passed ok, and when 10 min later I turned it on the screen went all stripes. I had it replaced, was flying with the new one, this time in the luggage, tucked in AND wrapped in aluminum foil - and it also died on arrival. Now I really don't know - are they that fragile, am I just not lucky or what the heck? The way there nothing happened, it was in an almost empty luggage and it arrived safely. Only on return, neatly packed and secured - dead. Sniff. Any ideas?

Thank you! I was wondering and it was a mystery - but I guess that ereader is complete <insert an appropriate adjective here> It caused me a lot of stress and disappointment as it always went dead when I arrived in foreign country with no option to return it and had to wait a few months to take it back where I bought it (=no reading until then). Recently, 2 weeks ago I bought an Opus which supports my language fonts - but now I dread to take it on a flight for the same reason, just in case.
That EB600 is still on guarantee so I will try to claim money back, I don't want it anymore.

A certain private pilot I know (ahem) was recently talking to his flying buddy with whom he regularly goes flying to practice ILS approaches. They observed that both regularly forget to turn their cellphones off before their flights. In several years, neither ever noticed any problems with the ILS. Perhaps if there were a planeful of people it would be different.

Are you sure it wasn't physically broken, as opposed to something the scanner did? A crack in the underneath substrate of the screen isn't itself really noticeable, but it does create a bunch of funny stripes.

What kind of case/cover was it in when it was in your bag?
