ok, 17 and 15 are tied for my new favourite number, because there is NOTHING like a really excellent pain de campagne. i haven't been able to eat any of that for 3 months now, so now i have a craving. thank god i can at least eat cheese again !

Poor old 14.

Why the sympathy?

Well, it's always followed by bad luck. Have you any idea how demoralising that is?

For instance, it's been stuck in the wings all this time idly waiting.

And then there was the time it invited its good friend 12 round for a dinner, only to find that the shops were completely sold out of parmigiano-reggiano save for some tiny plastic packages of truly awful industrial pre-grated packaging material sold as parmesan. And when 14 got home, it found out that the jar of pesto was off and aubergines were riddled with grubs. (Fortunately it turned out okay, as 12 help create something else wonderful out of some cous-cous, carrots, corgettes, apricots, raisins and a collection of herbs from 14's garden.)

And then there was the time 14 tried to move. Due to what a subsequent investigation claimed was an administrative error, 14's house, according to all searches, appeared to be built on a toxic waste dump, on the route of a major road construction project and in an area of high flood risk. Needless to say, that stopped all purchasers.

So let's have some sympathy for 14.
