Ever since i got my Libra 2. Updating has been scary. It usually takes multiple reboots (i am tired of seeing the three cycling dots over and over) before the device actually boots to the home screen after an update.

Even manual reboots are like this.

Thank you for the answer. This has been the first time, but after a normal restart, it's working fine and my menu and clock are there.

This is really not normal and I would consider a strong indicator that your device is malfunctioning.

How to get that through to a customer service representative ..... sorry, I can't really help there.

On a regular basis, no. There have been updates over the years that have taken longer than I’m used to to install, usually when a big change happens like the Home Screen or significant under the hood changes.

It is hard to explain to kobo that this is defective since it voots to the homescreen ultimately. They will just advice me to factory reset if the boots hang.

That's not my experience. Both my Sage and Libra 2 have updated normally.

Thing is, I prefer the extra features of kePub over kerning. Apparently word spacing is worse in kePubs with kerning on, so I've decided to forego kerning entirely now. Bad word spacing hurts my eyes more than absence of kerning does.

There's nothing clever about the kobopatch which enables kerning/ligatures in kepubs. All it does is make sure every kepub on the device can access the following CSS style when displaying text:
Code:
body{text-rendering:optimizeLegibility}
If you don't want to use kobopatch to do it, other methods exist. Only you can decide which is "best" (or least worst ) for you. The patch has the benefit that it should work equally well in kepubs delivered directly from the Kobo store and kepubs you sideload (via calibre or manually).

Other methods need to find a way to add the above CSS style to the CSS file(s) in each book. Here are 3 methods which should work, with varying pros/cons. Take your pick and experiment:
  1. Use the 'Modify CSS' option in the calibre Kobo driver (KoboTouch or KoboTouchExtended) to add it during the calibre Send-to-Device process. More details here.
  2. Use calibre's Convert > Look&Feel Styling > Extra CSS option to add it during conversion.
  3. Manually add it to each book using an epub editor (calibre or Sigil).

Question

Hello,
I don't know if this topic has already been covered, but with caliber, I have an error when importing to my Kobo Glo :
"calibre, version 5.40.0
WARNING: Failure: Kobo database version is not supported - See details

Your Kobo is running an updated firmware/database version. Since Caliber does not have information about this updated firmware, database editing has been disabled to prevent corruption. You can still send books to your Kobo with calibre, but book deletion and collection management are disabled. If you're willing to experiment and know how to reset your Kobo to factory settings, you can override this control by right-clicking the device icon in caliber and selecting "Configure this device" and then the "Attempt to manage newer firmware" option. You may then need to reset your Kobo to factory settings.

You can discuss any new Kobo firmware on the MobileRead Kobo forum. This forum can be found here https://www.mobileread.com/forums/fo...play.php?f=223.

Device database version: 168.
Device firmware version: (4, 32, 19501)

Could someone help me find a solution?
Thank you.

You do know that there are 2 types of factory reset don't you?

The"normal" one is in the Settings->Device Information section under ADVANCED. If you do this one it will factory reset to the last firmware version you have installed. The other on requires that you put the device in developers mode. Once in developers mode you go to Settings->Device Information->Developer options and on the third page under FACTORY RESET do "Factory reset your eReader:". If you reset this way it puts the device in the state that it originated in (firmware 4.28 or 4.29 IIRC).

You may want to go back to square one and see if that helps.

Good luck!

Just do as the message says. Select the option to support newer firmware levels.

Follow-up to post #308. Only Kobo know the answer to that one, however I'll contribute this snippet of (over-optimistic???) speculation.

This is a piece of code in the firmware (in libnickel.so.1.0.0) in versions pre-4.32:
Code:
body { -kobo-font-sharpness: %1; -kobo-font-thickness: %2; }
In fw 4.32 it changed to:
Code:
body { -kobo-font-sharpness: %1; -kobo-font-thickness: %2; text-rendering: %3; }
Parameters like %1, %2, %3 are usually (always???) read from the Kobo config file (.kobo/Kobo/Kobo eReader.conf) which the user can directly update, either via the GUI, or sometimes only via a manual text edit.

I wonder, is it possible that Kobo are planning to add a new feature for users to control ligatures/kerning in kepub via the text-rendering style? Unfortunately I don't have the necessary tech skills to do a deep dive into the firmware to investigate further.

Thank you very much.
Thanks to you, it worked.
But another question, what is Kepub?
What is the difference with ePub?
Is there a special plug-in?
Does it work on Kobo Glo?
Thank you.

Adjusting the hyphenation in kepubs helps with the weird word spacing when using the optimizeLegibility patch.

For sideloaded books, the update in the driver will add support for these statistics. In the "Update metadata on the device" section of the driver configuration, options for setting the book statistics have been added. This is optional and must be turned on. All four mentioned above can be set. For each, there is a template field for setting the value for statistic for each book. The result must be an integer. If any templates are empty, or do not return an integer the statistic will not be set for that book. The templates can be simple columns, or calculations based on column values. For example, I currently have:
Code:
Words: program:$$#words
Pages: program:$$#pages
Reading estimate Lower: program:mod($$#words, 12)
Reading estimate Higher: program:mod($$#words, 10)
The above are only examples and if you want to do something similar, you will need to adjust them too use the columns you have in calibre library. And @ownedbycats, I hope you enjoy having four more templates to break play with.

There is no attempt to make sure the values are sensible (the 12 and 10 are just numbers that I tested with). And there is no control over the formatting of the statistics on the device. That is done by the device.
I'm still not understanding quite how this works. I've made templates but I don't see any changes in the book on my Kobo. Where would the stats (ie, pages) appear on the device?
