Strictly yes, but, it is likely to cause any problems if you do not. The serial number should be all zeros, and that won't cause problems in most places. I can only think of one situation where it would cause a problem, and you are extremely unlikely to be affected by this.

If you want to set it, you can use a binary editor on the image file. The serial number is at offset 0x200. That has "SN-" and the serial number is after that.

So I have installed the new image and the Kobo will boot normally, but it will not take any updates, it appears stuck on version 4.7.10733. Am I missing something here?
