How can the KA1 be taken back to a prior version?

See the post immediately before your post. Or do a search. The method is the same for all Kobo devices from the Touch onwards.

I'm not real familiar with the Kobo desktop application, I think it's on the computer, but I've always done set up over wifi. It's probably real outdated. Like by 3 years or so. Only used it once to generate some file for Kobo customer support when I had trouble with my first Kobo Aura HD. Haven't touched it since.

How do I replace the firmware with it?

I don't mind doing a factory reset. Manually installing might be easier if I can find the instructions.

If you start the desktop app, it will check for an update, download and install it.

You let it do the setup and before ejecting the device, replace the firmware upgrade files with the version you want to use.

From memory, the instructions are in the second or third post of the firmware download thread. Otherwise, a search should find them.

The only issue I've seen with the new firmware is that the backlight isn't consistent, e.g. last night while reading in bed in one position, it first went bright, then darker, then bright and then (for the first time) decided to turn the light off. When I manually adjusted it back after 5 minutes it disabled it again. Was a little annoying...

I canconfirm the erratic behavior of backlight. Sometimes it even just doesn't turn on, no reason (the surrounding light is dimmed).

David, thanks!

So, since I only access Kobo using WiFi, I can't go back to a prior version without the KA1 re-syncing with the current sync version!?!

I'll have to mull over if I want to fix something that ain't broke by syncing to the new version.

Based on that I would assume that the 30 days also accounts for the ~700 hours of sleep time as opposed to binge reading.

So it seems that the discharge pace on the second charge is a little faster unless the battery discharge slows down in the next few days. I'm on 4.2.8110, and that's the only firmware version I had (I don't count what came on it as it was replaced by 4.2.8110 as part of the initial setup).
It's getting worse. After the third charge and about 6 hours of reading I'm down to 58%. Wi-Fi is off, light is off. This doesn't sound very promising

I haven't read all the posts in this long thread (I just bought a Kobo for the first time a few days ago), but I had almost the same rapid drain problems on my Nook Simple Touch ereader back in 2011 when I first got it. I even got a replacement device from Barnes and Noble, but it had the same problem. I "fixed" the problem by rebooting the device every time I charge it, right after I charge it. In other words, I power it down by long-pressing the power button. Then you have to turn it on with a long-press again on the power button. I think that the Kobo works the same when you do this procedure - it reboots, right?

Anyway, this actually solves the rapid battery drain problem on the Nook ST, at least on mine. If I do not reboot, it starts draining very quickly and can drain completely within a day or two. Maybe this helps?

That can help on any of the Kobo devices. There have been several different causes for it including some runaway processes. Restarting the device stops these processes. When they restart, they were usually OK for a while. Kobo have been doing a lot of work on these problems in all firmware versions since the Aura ONE and I think the main issues are fixed. Whether the remaining problems are physical (sleep cover not triggering sleep), other runaway processes or a misunderstanding of the battery usage (smaller battery, less runtime), I don't know.

The Kobo specs say the battery of the Aura ONE lasts form one month. That is at 30 minutes usage per day. Hence they spec it at about 15 hours battery life.

But, all that depends on how you use it. The above is probably with the WiFi and light off, and assumes an average reading rate. If you turned WiFi on and purely used the browser, the battery life would be a lot lower. The WiFi uses power and the browser refreshes the screen a lot.

If you are reading a book, it depends on how fast you read. The device renders a page, displays it on the screen and goes into a low power mode until you turn the page. So, most power usage is while turning a page. That means that if you are a slow reader, the battery will last longer. But if you are a fast reader, it will last less time. Both readers will probably get about the same number of page turns. If you also do things like make annotations or do dictionary lookups, there battery life will be shorted. Overall, the more you interact with the screen, the higher the more power used and hence the shorter the battery life.

The viable battery duration of the Aura One is perfectly acceptable.

End of discussion!

Also, I prefer not to let the battery fall below 20% before I recharge, if I can help it. I assume Kobo's 15-hour estimate means 15 hours to zero charge (or 5% or whatever the point is where you MUST recharge), but I start getting nervous at around 20% and just recharge it then, which makes it FEEL like I'm getting less than promised, when actually I'm not.

Personally, while I am reading I wait for 10% warning pop up. If I'm stopping for the night, I'll plug it in if 25% or less.
