Some time ago I bought and read "Priming the Pump", the TRS-80 book in the bundle. A very interesting read, but then the TRS-80 was my first computer, about 37 years ago, and took up thousands of hours of my spare time. It's only a few weeks since I finally gave the computer away to a good home.

Elvis Costello: A Biography by Tony Clayton-Lea - Free
Amazon US | Amazon UK | Amazon CA
Quote:
This is the story of Declan Patrick McManus, man who was born in 1955, left school at 17, worked as a computer operator by day and turned into a folk singer at night.

But more importantly it is also the story of Elvis Costello, a man who then transformed himself from a folk club into one of the finest songwriters to emerge from the punk rock era and ultimately into one of music’s finest musicians.

A chronicler of the complete emotional range, a lyricist of range and depth and a creator of soul-capturing melodies, Elvis Costello has been partnered and praised by figures as diverse as Paul McCartney, Tricky and Burt Bacarach. He is the only rock star of the past three decades to have continuously maintained his credibility, in the eyes and ears of both critics and fans.

He has successfully managed to avoid stereotyping, drawn on a wide range of musical sources, and utilised love, hate, romance, and repression throughout his song writing career. Now, it is time for his fascinating story to be told.

In 1977 Costello recorded his debut album during a series of ‘sick’ days from work. My Aim Is True introduced him to the public and the rock media as a cold, calculating cuckold with one leg in the bedroom and the other in the kitchen.

The album was little short of breath taking. After years of writing and rewriting songs in a fever of creativity, ambition and hope, the newly named Elvis had arrived with a bang. And the critics loved him.

Since then he has been glibly described in many ways, and given many false identities, but those on the look out for intelligent lyrics and diverse, real music have continued to take refuge in Costello records. His sequence of over 20 albums have spanned the entire popular music spectrum (with a spot of soundtrack, Irish and classical for good measure) and have garnered plaudits from loyal fans as well as death threats from angry Americans.

An eclectic musician and complex man, he is our least self-serving rock star but also the hardest to pin down. Here, Tony Clayton-Lea, an award winning music writer, has unravelled the story and the mind of Declan Patrick McManus.
From son of a big band leader in 50’s London to world-weary chronicler of emotions living in starry exile in Ireland, it’s a cerebral rock journey. A journey that starts in Costello’s head and moves into music history.

The price is certainly right. I saw this earlier in the day, and went ahead and grabbed it. I then went to check the ratings (Yes, I know, I should have followed the reverse order: check the ratings and then grab it if the ratings are good. ha).

To summarize what I found: there aren't any ratings at Amazon or GoodReads for this new (2016) edition. For the 1999 edition, they're abysmal--2.0 (6) at Amazon; 2.90 (49) at GoodReads (that may be for all 5 editions of this book that GoodReads shows as having been published, not just the 1999 one).

I deleted the book. After the fact, I realized that maybe I shouldn't have been so hasty, that maybe this most recent edition is much better than the previous editions. But, I've rarely seen that happen.

Just wanted to give everyone a heads up. If nothing else, you may want to peruse the book (more thoroughly) before grabbing it, even though it is free.

FREE A General Introduction to Psychoanalysis--To Celebrate His 160th Birthday!

I want to have a little fun with this post . . . .

It's the 160th anniversary of Sigmund Freud's birth. That's right, it's Freud's (not to be confused with a MobileReader with the username of "Froide") birthday. You did know that it's Siggy's birthday--didn't you?

I'm posting this book to mark this momentous occasion. GtrsRGr8 happens to love birthdays (except when I'm having another one. Ack!!!) and believes in celebrating them. It's sure better than commemorating the death of people and the start of wars as seems to be the trend lately. Ack!!!

Sure, this book is in the public domain and you can get a copy "anywhere" for free. Amazon has a free Kindle mobi, for example. But, it . . . well . . . leaves a lot to be desired, IMHO (the preview that you see is not of the ebook that you would get, it's of a nice paperback edition).

I ferreted out this edition, published by the University of Adelaide, of A General Introduction to Psychoanalysis by Freud. I'm posting it because of it being a pleasure to read because it is very clean, it has a clickable TOC, you can cut-and-paste the text (should you want to write a research paper about Sigmund Freud or this book or something), and, like the others, it's free.

I don't know how good the translation is, but I do know that the translator, G. Stanley Hall, has translated a lot of stuff, including the free Kindle mobi edition at Amazon.

A word about the formats: ostensibly, you can get ePub, mobi, and html. However, I got no download and got an error message, instead, when I tried to download the mobi. YMMV. The html comes in a zip file; if you are sure, really sure, that you want to read the html (Ack!!), you can get it by clicking on the "download" link at the bottom of the first page. The links for the ePub and Kindle mobi are there also.

And a word of advice . . . . party responsibly. Keep the noise and music down (because of the neighbors), don't eat too much birthday cake, and make sure that you have a designated driver or get a taxi so that you can be around next year for Siggy's 161st birthday. I can't wait!

Title: A General Introduction to Psychoanalysis.
Format(s): EPub; mobi; html.
Author(s): Sigmund Freud; G. Stanley Hall.
Publisher: University of Adelaide.
Pages: Approximately 385.
Ebook Rating/Number of Reviews (Amazon): 4.1 (55).
Price: $0.00.
Lowest Price at (or through Amazon) if available from there: $0.00.
Book Description (GoodReads):
ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Sigmund Freud was an Austrian neurologist who founded the discipline of psychoanalysis. Freud is best known for his theories of the unconscious mind and the mechanism of repression, and for creating the clinical method of psychoanalysis for investigating the mind and treating psychopathology through dialogue between a patient (or "analysand") and a psychoanalyst.
Freud postulated that sexual drives were the primary motivational forces of human life, developed therapeutic techniques such as the use of free association, discovered the phenomenon of transference in the therapeutic relationship and established its central role in the analytic process; he interpreted dreams as sources of insight into unconscious desires. He was an early neurological researcher into cerebral palsy, aphasia and microscopic neuroanatomy, and a prolific essayist, drawing on psychoanalysis to contribute to the history, interpretation and critique of culture.

Comments: I believe that this is a legal free download in the U.S. because 1) the text is in the public domain, being first published prior to 1923, and 2) it is in the collection of free ebooks at the University of Adelaide, "Ebooks @ Adelaide" ("Free books, online")(https://ebooks.adelaide.edu.au/). For Aussies, the ebook states, "To the best of our knowledge, the text of this work is in the “Public Domain” in Australia."

30% Discount at Krause Publications Bookstore, on Top of Prior Discounts.

Krause Publications is a niche publisher. Probably the majority of the books and ebooks that they sell have to do with collecting and similar types of hobbies.

Their bookstore is currently offering 30% off of all books and ebooks. A large number of the books are marked down already. I noticed some 50%, there may be some with a higher discount than that. The 30% will stack on top of that discount.

This sale is not only of Krause Publications, but also of other publishers whose publications are regularly sold in the Krause Publications Bookstore. The publications from the other publishers encompass a large variety of non-fiction subjects, not just on collecting and such.

All of the ebooks probably will be in the PDF format. At least some of the titles are not available at all as ebooks at Amazon. Of those that I checked, the ebooks at Krause were less expensive than any new physical copies that Amazon sells.

Some of the ebooks at Krause with the initial markdown, as well as the 30% off, are difficult, at least, to find. I checked one on Luzme.com (which claims to find the lowest price on any ebook), and they could not find it at all. Ebooks.com had it (sorry, I don't remember which format it was in), but the price was about twice what the ebook would be at Krause with the discounts.

I say all of that to say this. You may have to do some hunting, but if you do, you're likely to find some ebooks that are hard to find and/or hard to find at a good price.

I suggest that you start your odyssey at this webpage at the Krause Bookstore, and select the way that you would like for them to be sorted. To get the additional discount, use code RENEW30 at checkout. The extra 30% off is good through May 15.

I want to alert you to a what I consider to be a less-than-forthright offer from NoiseTrade. I got it in my email today.

As they often do, NoiseTrade offered an ebook. Heretofore, as far as I'm aware, these have been complete books, not excerpts, samples, previews, select chapters, etc., etc. Well, that wasn't the case today.

This time, at least (I don't remember the exact wording of previous offers), there was a button that said "download ebook" (emphasis mine, G). Not "part of the ebook," not "excerpt," not "sample," not "preview," not "chapter," not et al, but "ebook." If you click on that button, and then a subsequent one, you get a request for a $1 tip. You can zero that out, and choose to "download pdf" without paying. That's what I did. However, what I got was only the cover and the 7-page Introduction.

Well, since I had zeroed out the tip box, I didn't lose anything per se. But I want to make everyone aware of this, because some people may leave a tip of $1 (and, I assume, you could leave as much as you wanted to, and probably some do that) and have their money end up going "down the drain."

In all fairness, there was a tip off (no pun intended) before clicking on "download." The webpage, under "formats available," showed PDF, with a file size of only 364.1 KB--much too small to be the complete book (the Kindle mobi is 304 pages)! But people shouldn't have to depend upon seeing that to know whether or not they are getting the "ebook" and not just some piece of it.

I have frequently passed along NoiseTrade's offers to you, but NoiseTrade is officially on probation with me beginning now--no more posts from me of their offers for the foreseeable future.

Am I steamed? Yes.

ADDENDUM: What I said above applies to the first of three ebooks that they offered. I checked the second one. The complete ebook downloaded, and without me having to leave a tip.

I'm assuming that this offer was for Taylor Pearson's The End of Jobs. Maybe they got a bunch of complaints about this, because it now includes this

Or it could be that I just missed it.

Even if it has been there all along, it was/is in small print, in a gray color that doesn't provide much contrast with the white background, and not in a prominent position (you really need to read the 3-paragraph "About the Book" to notice it). I had to hunt for it in order to find it. Also, I just downloaded it again, and I don't get 3 chapters--I still get just the cover and 7-page Introduction. So, that appears to be inaccurate. And does NoiseTrade really expect people to leave a tip in order to read a 3-chapter excerpt?

Thanks for the feedback.

I almost always download an ebook, audio, or whatever it is, before I pass along the information about it. From now on, I will do that always with anything from NoiseTrade.

For things from NoiseTrade that I don't post, I urge MobileReaders to read very carefully everything from NoiseTrade connected with the offers. If you decide to leave a tip, I urge you to do it after you find out that the item is everything that you expected it to be.

Thanks, G.
