Just to clarify, the audiobooks that I purchase with KU Do stay in Audible when I return the book. But the FREE Audible books with KU "companions" are deleted when the book is returned.

Correct; although you still have access to the KU books (e & audio) whenever you want as long as you maintain your KU membership.

Except that books come and go as KU books. So, there is no guarantee the book will be free to read, later. Assuming, of course, you want to re-read the book.

For now, it does seem that all of Amazon's imprints are always in KU (although there may be exceptions, I don't recall running into any).

$1.95 -- Rain Reign -- Ann M Martin -- read by Laura Hamilton (4.1 hrs) --> teens (11~13)

Quote:
Rose Howard has OCD, Asperger's syndrome, and an obsession with homonyms (even her name is a homonym). She gave her dog Rain a name with two homonyms (Reign, Rein), which, according to Rose's rules of homonyms, is very special. Rain was a lost dog Rose's father brought home. Rose and Rain are practically inseparable. And they are often home alone, as Rose's father spends most evenings at a bar, and doesn't have much patience for his special-needs daughter.

Just as a storm hits town, Rain goes missing. Rose's father shouldn't have let Rain out. Now Rose has to find her dog, even if it means leaving her routines and safe places to search. Rose will find Rain, but so will Rain's original owners.

Hearts will break and spirits will soar for this powerful story, brilliantly told from Rose's point of view.

$4.99 -- World Gone By -- Dennis Lehane -- read by Jim Frangione (9.1 hrs) --> mystery / thriller

Quote:
Coughlin Series Book 3

Dennis Lehane, the New York Times bestselling author of The Given Day and Live by Night, returns with a psychologically and morally complex novel of blood, crime, passion, and vengeance, set in Cuba and Ybor City, Florida, during World War II, in which Joe Coughlin must confront the cost of his criminal past and present.

Ten years have passed since Joe Coughlin's enemies killed his wife and destroyed his empire, and much has changed. Prohibition is dead, the world is at war again, and Joe's son, Tomás, is growing up. Now, the former crime kingpin works as a consigliore to the Bartolo crime family, traveling between Tampa and Cuba, his wife's homeland.

A master who moves in and out of the black, white, and Cuban underworlds, Joe effortlessly mixes with Tampa's social elite, U.S. Naval intelligence, the Lansky-Luciano mob, and the mob-financed government of Fulgencio Batista. He has everything—money, power, a beautiful mistress, and anonymity.

But success cannot protect him from the dark truth of his past—and ultimately, the wages of a lifetime of sin will finally be paid in full.

Dennis Lehane vividly recreates the rise of the mob during a world at war, from a masterfully choreographed Ash Wednesday gun battle in the streets of Ybor City to a chilling, heartbreaking climax in a Cuban sugar cane field. Told with verve and skill, World Gone By is a superb work of historical fiction from one of "the most interesting and accomplished American novelists" (Washington Post) writing today.

Thanks - that was another question - whether KU books come-and-go.
I am wondering if it is worth it to continue both Audible and KU, so I have both for a few months to compare.

Thanks for the heads up. I don't have KU, so I'm not that familiar with its catalog.

Downgrading to "Light" level...

Just thought I'd update what really happened in this situation, to add a bit of "real world" info: I was *not* allowed to get the Light level subscription ($9.95/year, no credits given) when I did the "Chat" thing to downgrade my subscription (I didn't try the phone-in option).

I was told by the CSR my account was ineligible for the Light plan. The reason? It was a "gift" membership so the downgrade to Light was not allowed; only paid memberships can downgrade to Light ('not sure about the introductory membership deals and their eligibility).

CSR offered three months at $7.49/month and at the conclusion of that time period, I could downgrade to the Light membership. I counter-offered one month at $7.49/month. I already have five credits I haven't used--'not really sure what I'm waiting for, but there you are and *then* a downgrade. That was accepted.

In short, gift memberships cannot downgrade to Light memberships--or at least that's what they told me.

Thanks for reporting this. I suspected that gift memberships wouldn't be eligible, but wasn't sure. Now we know.

BTW, trial/introductory memberships do qualify for the "Light Plan". I'm always offered that option whenever I cancel a trial membership.

PS: I'll spend your credits for you and won't even charge you for doing it

Makes sense, I guess. The point of Light is to retain a paying customer, so if you were not a paying customer in the first place....

With the LL plan, do you get the 30 percent-off member prices? The info at Audible's site doesn't actually say so.

I read her best known work, Silas Marner, in high school and don't even remember what its about. I love classic lit, so I might consider listening to this one. Thanks for posting.
