Sorry to jump in on this but my beloved Mini is now useless after I used the pc kobo app to try to sync my books. I tried to put in update in the .kobo file but now it won't start up or anything. Can someone help me with an image so I can redo the SD card? Thanks

Hey everyone,
I would also like to get an old Kobo mini up and running, but the setup via Kobo Desktop does not work (it says: no internet connection, but that's not the problem) and the setup via WLAN does take forever. I would like to try updating the image. Could anyone provide me with an image and some advice how to flash it? Thank you! |

PM sent. But...
I don't expect the image to help. If the device is booting enough for you to know WiFi is failing, and for it to connect to a PC, then it is unlikely to be an image issue. The WiFi issues will almost definitely be related to Kobo withdrawing most of the support for the device. That happened when they had to remove older security protocols from their servers because those protocols are no longer considered to be secure. The older firmware on the Mini does not support the newer protocols. Kobo did a firmware release for the Mini to allow WiFi to continue working, but, they do not support syncing books. The Kobo desktop should still support the Mini. When the announcement was made, this was stated as the way to do the setup for the Mini in the future. If you care getting WiFi connection errors using that, it is unlikely to have anything to do with the device. Make sure it is up to date and can sync your books. You can also sideload the firmware. The last official release for the Mini is 3.19.5761-s. You can download it from https://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/Kobo_Firmware_Releases. And while they aren't officially supported, all later versions have been tested by people here and reported to work. Of course, some of the issues could be because the SD card is failing. If so, replace it and use the image. You can use a larger card, but, I don't remember if anyone has tested a 32GB card in the Mini. Up to 16GB will work. |

Hi davidfor,
Thank you for the PM. What you say disheartens me a little, but I will try all the possibilities you pointed out. I bought the Kobo mini at a garage sale and it was barely used, so I hope I can make any use of it. When I try to set it up via wireless, I can enter the proper date and time, enter my wireless password, then it seems to connect to the internet, but it is then stuck with "looking for updates". When I try to set it up with Kobo Desktop it appears to be downloading an upgrade, but as soon as it would switch to installing the upgrade, Kobo Desktop complains about the seemingly missing internet connection. I hope that at some point I'd be able to make it useable. So far, I am stuck with the setup screen. Thank you again for your help! |

Update: It worked. \o/
What I did: I used a new SD card with 32 GB (didn't have a smaller one), because the image was too big for the original 2 GB card. (I would like to try to expand the partition, but for now I'm glad it worked and am satisfied with the 1.3 GB free space which is apparently part of the image.) I flashed the SD card with the image. The setup via Kobo Desktop again didn't work right away, but after loading the most recent firmware (3.19.5761-s from 2015), everything worked out fine. I was a little freaked out when it took a while to update and the screen froze in the process, but sometimes one just needs to be patient. ![]() Thanks again for your help! I couldn't have done it without you. |

Kobo Mini Image card
Hi everyone, I was wondering if someone could please PM me the SD card image of a Kobo Mini e-reader. My Kobo mini software got corrupted and I really want to use it again. I ask you to please provide me with the SD card image. If possible, could someone also send me the steps on what I should do? Your help and support are very much appreciated. My uncle gave me this as a birthday gift and I want to use it. Thank you so much for your help. My Kobo only shows 3 dots in a straight line down the middle. The dots turn from filled to empty from top to bottom. When I shut it down, it shows the same dots but not filled. Thank you for taking your time to read this.

The first thing to do is try a manual factory reset. Follow the last set of instructions on https://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/Kobo_Reset:_Mini. If that doesn't work and you need to use the image, look at Memory Upgrade Mod Guide. They are for the Glo, but the basic steps and tools are the same. |

Sorry to be a pain David but I could do with a little extra advice.
I successfully copied the image you provided onto an 8gb card. Still had the issue whereby connecting to Kobo desktop gives the false "Internet issue" failure, so I downloaded and unzipped the last known usable firmware and copied to the .Kobo directory. When I remove the Mini from my pc, nothing noticeable is happening/updating and I still get the same "internet" issue when connected to Kobo desktop. Do I need to press the reset button on the back of the mini to get the new firmware to load? |

And what files did you copy? It should be the files "KoboRoot.tgz" and "manifest.md5sum" and the directory "upgrade". It should handle this as soon as you eject the device. The Kobo desktop should be able to do it. Have you updated it? It is at version 4.30.16653. But, any recent version should work. If that isn't connecting, it suggests another issue. It needs to be able to reach https://api.kobobooks.com to get check the firmware version. And then get the actual download from an Akamai cache |

Thanks for the quick reply David.
Yes it was the last "official" firmware, so 3.19.5761. I'm in work now so I will check when I get home. Seem to recall that KoboRoot.tgz" and "manifest.md5sum" were both there but there were several other files/directories too, not just "upgrade". I'll take some screenshots and share them here (if that's possible?) tomorrow morning. Thanks again for your assistance. |
