The Doge of Venice was the leader of the city of Venice from around 700 AD to when the last Doge resigned in 1797 AD.

If you treat each word as an anagram, in fact I have changed only one letter, i.e. the D in READ to an S;but maybe you also mean that the order of the letters should remain the same, do you?

Oh yes. The new word must be the same letters in the same order as the old word. You may change one letter for another or add a letter or remove a letter. You can't re-arrange the letters in the word. That would be too easy!

Oh dear, I'm so sorry but I think I goofed again! And I spent ages working out the route from one word to t'other, permitting the anagram approach.

Therefore, I'm not at all sure we'll manage to get to the target word after all, but let's have a go anyway...
