If B&N has exclusivity to an ebook title that I wanted to read, I would go without, or just wait a few years until it is available in a format I use. I am not so impatient that I have to have the latest and greatest and everything right now.

That is part of the problem this technophilia, too many people want everything now, everything in the format they want, and they want any company they use to have it in the format they want. If they don't get it then they throw a fit like a 3 year old, such as the case "wahhh Amazon needs to sell ePub". They use every excuse and opinionated motivation to try to sway people to their cause.

In reality, Amazon is a private business, they have every right to sell/not sell whatever they want. There is no social or legal stance that says Amazon is required nor should they HAVE TO sell something just because some of you think they should.

Aye, customers are pesky little things. Always going off and having their own ideas. Can't be expected to sit down and think what corporations want them to think. Damned inconvenient. Would you pass the Grey Poupon?

Very good point!

Whenever I use the word monopoly in reference to Amazon, someone always pipes up and asks, What Monopoly? But the threat is real. And they wouldn't even have to have 100% of the market--if they captured a significant fraction of the ebook market, it will be very hard for anyone to manufacture a competing product.

Sometimes I feel like only I and a few die-hards understand the immense value of a free market with real choice. For instance, it astounds me how few people see any problem at all with Microsoft Windows owning such a large share of the desktop market.

I don't remember anyone trying to force Amazon to do anything, or to take away their rights.
The thread title asks, How can we convince Amazon ....
And it's a very popular thread!

If you hadn't selected your nickname, I would never point out how apt it is.

I like having limited choice for some things. Gotta spend 45 minutes in the shampoo isle as it is. How many do they need to make?! There's like 500.

the reverse is also true. By the time amazon decides to move in France, people might have some ePub library already, and refuse to switch over.
Which would make it not much different than the American market where Sony's LRF format had been established as the market leader for over a year by the time the Kindle was introduced. As long as Amazon can offer a sufficient quantity of books in French, I don't see why ePub, or not, matters.

How do to sell mobi book in France, when 99% having e-readers uses e-readers that don't reads mobi ?
You sell them Kindles, just like they've been doing here in the US.

Are exclusivity deals limited in time ? How long ? As far as can tell, they can be "forever".

Tell me, if B&N have exclusivity deal on a book you want to read, and amazon have exclusivity on an other books you want to read too, do you get a nook, or a kindle ? Basically, you're screwed.

And yes, I a customer, I expect the shops / publishers to make life easy for me.

Too bad, people already own a sony, cybook or fnacbook, and don't fell like spending money on an other e-reader.
