So we always have to test the Hgb level before the process?

On the second thought, that isn't so bad considering they took the blood sample from the back of my hand heheh, if they want to prick my fingertip, they'll surely say bye-bye to my blood

Kitten claws are SHARP! And their points do a lot of damage - to you, your furniture, other cats. Start trimming them right away so she gets used to it. You can use regular nail clippers while she's tiny - I use cat nail trimmers shaped like small scissors with curved blades.

Make sure she knows from the start which are the acceptable scratching posts and which are not. No need to yell or punish - if you see her scratching the sofa, just relocate her to the scratching post. Again, patience required.

Ah yes, I remember someone told me that when Sushi was still a kitten. She hasn't scratched anything yet. I'll introduce her to the scratching pole tonight, because I don't think she knows what it's for.

I'm with you guys! I'd much rather have them take blood from my arm than my finger tip. Especially those idiot phlebotomists who INSIST on taking from my left hand! I've been playing guitar for more than 50 years... the callous' on my left hand fingers must be 1/2" thick (or so it feels!) and those damn lab techs just keep jabbing and jabbing and jabbing trying to get through! Now tell me... is there really a difference between the blood in my left hand and the blood in my right?

Those really make the job much easier!

As cats love to climb, 'making' a scratching post from a 5" tree branch wrapped with 1/4" hemp rope gives them a toy to play on, a scratching post, and a 'legal' climbing place. We bought one of these multi-level cat 'habitats,' but Felicity just jumps up to her favorite hang-outs rather than climbing, and never uses it as a scratching post. She 'climbs' all over the tree branch several times a day, and uses the lower area as her scratching post. It's also her favorite place to be brushed. She sort of 'hangs' down while getting her head brushed!

if they want to check the Hgb level, the blood in left hand differs from the blood in the right (or so I think )

I could understand if they were checking O2 levels in the blood. Blood passing through the lungs will pick up O2, depleting it along the way around the body. And it IS the hemoglobin that carries the O2. But the hemoglobin should remain the at the same level... Maybe the tests for hemo actually are O2 measurements... Hmmmm......

It's something for me to look into and learn....

No, they actually measure the Hemoglobin concentration before blood donation.

And because Hgb carries Oxigen, maybe they measure the Oxigen concentration and therefore deduce the Hbg concentration?

To my way of thinking, that makes sense. Otherwise why would it matter which hand to take the blood from. The ONLY difference I can imagine would be oxygenation. But I'm not a real doctor. I only 'play' doctor. I still believe organ transplants should be left to professionals.

Thank heaven for small favors!

As for me, I'm being grateful. We went to Chris's parents today for a "surprise" party for his birthday. (Two things Chris hates are surprises and being lied to, so I decided his mother's surprise wasn't worth Chris being upset with me so I told him). The family party went well, and all was good until we came off one highway onto another on the way home, and the brake pedal went all the way to the floor and the brake dummy light came on. Chris got it to a safe exit and safely stopped, and took a look, discovering no brake fluid left and a leak in the brake lines. So his buddy Alan came and picked us and the truck up (he has access to a trailer). So we're all (all being us and Chris's Blazer) in one piece, no one got hurt, but man that is scary.

It's one of those little rules we all have for ourselves. I try to be somewhat flexible, but there are a few rules I don't break.

Whoa! Huston... we have a problem... Busted breaks really are scary as hell! I'm glad to hear that everything worked out at the end, and that all are safe. BTW... wish Chris a happy birthday!

Yikes -- that's one of my not-so-secret fears! I'm glad you guys are okay, though, and THAT is Chris's best birthday present. Tell him I said Happy Birthday.

They've always pricked the side of a fingertip on whichever hand was most convenient - usually my right hand. I suggest you tell them they can't have your left hand, Stichy. Tell them you're saving that one for someone else and watch for the look on their face.

A finger prick should not hurt. Tell them to use the right hand. Make them wait for you to wash your hands with soap and hot water, no alcohol swab. The hot water will soften your skin enough that the lancet slides smoothly into your skin.
