and why is that important? Does that let you get around the drm by downloading old file formats?

Yes and it also allows downloading KF8/azw3 format which a lot easier to deal with than the bytecode semicompiled KFX format which

Also the covers and illustrations are not gratuitously converted to monochrome on azw3/KF8 like they are with KFX.

I get "better" downloads on my Kindle Keyboard / K3 than on a PW3. Years ago we switched to PC download for the PW3 to avoid KFX, but now that's gone.

I have replaced battery twice (really a cell), but even so I connect to charger before enabling WiFi and keep it on charger long enough so indexing or whatever is complete after download.

After the PW1 the models without KFX got it backported. K3 to PW1 inclusive (ex DXG) get azw3/kF8 instead of KFX.

The K1, K2 and all variations of the DX and DXG are pointless. No azw3/KF8, and mostly they can't connect anyway!

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this, but Epubor's license activation server is currently down, so all their apps are reverting to free trial mode.

This is because their apps require a constant online connection for authentication.

No matter how many times I try, I can only create a key with 0 bytes using the SATS method. I am also creating a dump file by downloading it with K4PC and executing it. There are no errors in the command of the key creation tool.
Does anyone know what the issue is?

Try asking on their GitHub repository, because MR prohibits detailed help with DRM removal.

Regarding Kindle, Epubor has not yet managed to address the recent DRM changes.
While they do handle DRM removal for several regional eBook stores, some of which appears to be their own work (though I recently learned their honto solution is based on a project that received a DMCA takedown on GitHub).

Although BookFab has received quite a negative reception here, they initially employed a "hack" to download files with the old KFX DRM using a newer version of K4PC.
However, they now locally remove the DRM from the latest KFX files generated by the most recent version of K4PC. It is unclear if they are referencing Satsuoni's research, but it seems they have successfully overcome the challenge head-on.

Epubor's servers are still offline. If they have indeed abandoned their business, it would be a great shame, as their application was useful for eBook stores other than Kindle.
This might, however, present a new business opportunity for BookFab.

Epubor is a scam, they just repackage public available methods, mostly from DeDRM and sell it to you.

I doubt the account safety the Bookfab mentioned. It seems their conversion process still requires the internet, so they are likely still communicating with Amazon's servers.

The only thing that's just a wrapper for DeDRM is their Epubor Ultimate, their other standalone apps are not based on DeDRM. They were particularly focused on the Japanese and German markets.
