$1.99 -- Tau Zero -- Poul Anderson/ Neil Hellegers --> 7.8 hrs --> sci-fi

Quote:
This science fiction novel describes the epic voyage of the spacecraft Leonora Christine, which will take a fifty-strong crew to a planet some thirty light years distant.

From practically the very first page, Tau Zero sets scientific realities in dramatic tension with the very real emotional and psychological states of the travelers, exploring the effect of time contraction due to traveling at near-light speed on the human psyche. This tension is a dynamic that Anderson explores with great success over the course of the novel as fifty crewmembers settle in for the long journey together. While they are a highly trained team of scientists and researchers and therefore professionals, they are also a community of individuals, each of them trying to create for him or herself a life in a whole new space—or, literally, in space.

It isn’t long, however, before the voyage takes a turn for the worse. The ship passes through a small, uncharted nebula that makes it impossible to decelerate the ship. Their only hope is to do the opposite and speed up. But acceleration towards and within the speed of light means that time outside the spaceship passes even more rapidly, sending the crew deeper into space and further into an unknown future.

$3.95 -- A Pleasure to Burn -- Ray Bradbury/ Scott Brick --> 12.2 hrs --> sci-fi

Quote:
A Pleasure to Burn: Fahrenheit 451 Stories

Ray Bradbury’s novel Fahrenheit 451 is an enduring masterwork of twentieth-century American literature—a chilling vision of a dystopian future built on the foundations of ignorance, censorship, and brutal repression. The origins and evolution of Bradbury’s darkly magnificent tale are explored in A Pleasure to Burn, a collection of sixteen selected shorter works that prefigure the grand master’s landmark novel. With classic, thematically interrelated stories alongside many crucial lesser-known ones—including, at the collection’s heart, the novellas “Long after Midnight” and “The Fireman”—A Pleasure to Burn is an indispensable companion to the most powerful work of America’s preeminent storyteller and a wondrous confirmation of the inimitable Bradbury’s brilliance, magic, and fire.

Description
The Book of Luke is the third and by far the longest of the four Gospels that chronicle the life of Jesus Christ.
<snip>
Well, Luke is the third Gospel (in the arrangement in which we typically have the books in our Bibles), but I would not say that it is "by far" the longest.

Luke has 24 chapters, Matthew has 28. So, it is the second longest in number of chapters. But the chapters differ in length, of course, and Luke turns out to have a greater average number of words in each chapter. So, it turns out that Luke is longer than Matthew by the number of words, but only by what I would consider a relatively small amount (Luke--has about 19482; Matthew--has about 18345).

A Christmas Carol -- Charles Dickens (1812~1870)

Quote:
A Christmas Carol is a novella by Charles Dickens. It was first published in London by Chapman & Hall on 19 December 1843. The novella met with instant success and critical acclaim. Carol tells the story of a bitter old miser named Ebenezer Scrooge and his transformation into a gentler, kindlier man after visitations by the ghost of his former business partner Jacob Marley and the Ghosts of Christmases Past, Present and Yet to Come.

The book was written at a time when the British were examining and exploring Christmas traditions from the past as well as new customs such as Christmas cards and Christmas trees. Carol singing took a new lease on life during this time. Dickens' sources for the tale appear to be many and varied, but are, principally, the humiliating experiences of his childhood, his sympathy for the poor, and various Christmas stories and fairy tales.

I just had to see for myself if the people who've said the borrow-a-Kindle-library-book-get-the-narration-for-the-Whispersync-price is not longer working were really right. They are. I've got an audiobook borrowed from one of the libraries (downloaded as a Kindle) where I have borrowing privileges. I checked Audible--the audiobook was the regular price.

Just wanted to pass that along to anyone who is as hardheaded (if there be such a person in the world) as me.

I might be a close second in the hard-headed department I, too, had to check it out for myself, hoping it was a glitch or wrong information. Yes, it's true, so I guess I'll probably not be listening to library books anymore

X-link to the DRM-free thread for a bundle which includes some audiobooks:

Humble Book Bundle Neil Gaiman contains 3 audiobooks: 1 of live performance readings by the author himself at the $8 middle tier, and 2 at the $15 top tier for more dramatic readings of his own works. There's also a whole bunch of rare prose, poetry, and graphic novel work from the popular Hugo Award-winning author.

If I cancel my Audible membership how long do you think I should leave it before I try and claim the 2 month for 99cents offer on the first page. I know I might not be able to get it but should I leave it say a week before trying to sign up with it?

My current membership of Audible.com is the HSN 2 months for free, I'm going to use my 2nd credit tomorrow then cancel.

The $0.99 promo is a "come back to Audible" promo and should be available immediately. Waiting a few days won't matter. Sometimes Audible promos stipulate that you haven't been billed in the last 3 or 6 months for a subscription, but this one doesn't have that restriction.

Before signing onto the $0.99 promo, try and get the free LivingSocial promo. I'm currently on that one. I went from the HSN to the LivSoc promo without any hitches.
