FREE/BARGAIN — Audiobooks

Just want to add a bit of my opinion to the blurb for Johnny Get Your Gun. I really don't like the way the blurb (IMO, at least) describes the book. Although it's factually accurate, to me the blurb sort of makes it sound as if the book is mostly a commentary on racism. But it is both a mystery and a book that deals with the racism that was blatant at that time and place. (We could discuss whether racism is still blatant now, but that would require a different forum, and in any case, at the time/place of this book, it definitely was...) The book is not just a political commentary - it's also a good mystery.

Of course, IMO, the best book in the series is the first and probably best-known one, In the Heat of the Night, which was made into a pretty famous Oscar-winning movie as well. But I think Johnny is also well worth reading/listening to - and of course, especially since it's free. So if you, like me, were sort of put off by the blurb - I guess what I'm trying to say is, don't be!

- There are no ratings yet at Amazon (ebook) or GoodReads (ebook), but the book was published barely over a month ago.
- Jena Pincott's other books at Amazon have a great track record of high ratings.

FWIW, you can get the ebook for only 99 cents at Amazon.

Unlike with the Whispersync deals, where the audio and ebook sync together (so where you leave off reading the ebook, you can pick up at the same place to listen to the audiobook, and vice versa), I assume that you will not be able to do that with the free Sync giveaway, if you have the Amazon ebook. However, the edition of the audio at Audible and the edition at Sync appear to be identical.

If sync'ing is important to you, you might wish to know that right now Amazon is offering the audiobook for only $1.98, if you buy the ebook. That constitutes what is called a "Whispersync deal."

Even if you never go to Google Play, you might want to pay a visit now, especially if you have never bought an audiobook from them before.

The reason is that they are currently offering "$5 off your first audiobook over $5."

Well, I have never bought an audiobook from them, so I guess that I'm eligible. So, I'm going to head on over there as soon as I get through letting you all know about the deal.

The fine print: "Valid for $5 discount against the current store price of an audiobook from eligible titles on Google Play. Discount may only be applied to eligible titles with an on store price greater than $5 before tax is imposed. Open to participants based on purchase history. Credit applied at checkout. Valid in United States only."

The one thing--well, make that two things--that mitigates my interest in the deal is 1) the $5 off is only on "eligible titles." It remains to be seen whether or not the "eligible titles" are any good; and 2) $5 may not end up being much of a discount if the audioboooks are over-priced to begin with.

Look for a banner ad, making this offer, at the top of the page at Play.Google.com.

I wondered why I hadn't been getting offers in my email from Google Play lately.

About 6-9 months ago, I went to something like Settings > Email Preferences > Send Me Notifications of Specials, at Google Play, and found that the slider button thingie was set to "off." Well, I set it to "on." I started getting some offers from them.

Yesterday, trying to figure out why that I wasn't getting their promotions lately, I followed the same procedure and, lo and behold, I found that the slider button was set to "off" again. Don't know how that happened (maybe it was from some well-meaning utilities program?), but I set it back to "on."

The upshot is: check that slider button, if you haven't been getting promotional offers from Google Play, and you want to get those offers.

You may have to do this separately for each Google "store"--audiobooks, books, music, et al., I dunno.
