I tried it yesterday as I was having problems editing a book. Every time I saved it the changes would be lost. I ended up using Sigil and converting with Kepubify which seemed to work a treat.

but then sygil presented the problem again

what version?

I'm on 3.7.0 but I don't notice any problems with italics

What happens if you put to space before the <i>? Does it remove the one space and leave the other?

Same issue here. It also happens with <a id="xxx"></a>

This doesn't work, when I first ran into the problem my first instinct was to Find and Replace all " <i>" with an extra space like " <i>" and both still gets completely stripped.

Having the same problem with spaces before italics removed.
Here is a test epub before and after converting to kepub. Both automatic conversion when sending to kobo and a manual conversion gave the same result.

I've got another issue with the driver related to css, both with 3.7.1 and 3.72. I've reverted to 3.7.0 and open an issue in github.

I had a similar issue with 3.7.1 and reverted to 3.7.0 rather than do more testing. My issue was p.A + p.B (or some such) not being honored.

I had reverted to 3.7.1 from 3.7.2 due to a missing space issue.
