But since I have gotten my Cybook, the number of books I am reading at a given time keeps increasing ![]() Right now I'm not even sure how many I am reading exactly (sometimes I start one and more or less forget about it, lol), but I have at least three: Le rouge et le noir by Stendhal The voyage of the Beagle by Darwin A la recherche du temps perdu by Proust, second volume Both Darwin and Proust take some time, I like them but I get tired of reading them. I'm not sure I would have gotten that far if I was reading them in paper form. Plus there's all the quickie romance stuff I sneak in between. Those go much faster but I will just interrupt more serious reading for a few hours or days, get my romance fix and then come back to the serious stuff ![]() So yes, my reading habits have changed. Also, I read a lot more. I think it's because of the immediate availability of books. Whenever I feel like a change, I can just download a new book and start reading it immediately. I wasn't a great TV fan anyway, but I think e-books have almost completely replaced it now. Instead of switching it on and watching something silly, I download something silly ![]() I also have to say that the average quality of my reading has gone down a bit. I download a lot of stuff I would never have bought in paper form, and unfortunately some of the better quality stuff I'd like to read is not available in e-book form. But I'm not complaining, in fact I'm enjoying this a lot. Hopefully in the not to far future, I will be able to find everything or almost everything I want to read and things will be more balanced. |

That's interesting, Florence.
Like Superlucky, I tend to have one or two non-fics on the go as well as reading two or three novels simultaneously. I can read for longer that way, I find. Don't get droopy or tired. And, like you, I'm reading much more just for fun, and much more widely after work (which is a different kinda reading -- I'm a fiction editor). I guess -- certainly for me -- it comes down to 'convenience reading'. I write, edit and read for a living. When I take a break or go to bed, the last thing I need is a stack of books in paperback, hardback and paper to shuffle through. But maybe it's what I want. Really enjoying myself flipping between reads (with the push off a wee button) as I never did before. Ereaders WILL change our reading habits -- not only how we read but what we read (as you say, taking a chance at genres we'd normally snub). That can only be a good thing, eh? Gosh, do I love my reader! Wish I'd had it half a century ago when I learned what reading was really about. Best wishes. Neil |

I’m reading An Iliad by Alessandro Baricco. It’s a quite interesting book, a prose retelling of the Iliad by Homer. Baricco eliminated the appearance of all gods in his story though. And he tells it from the first-person viewpoint of different characters such as Odysseus, Nestor, Achilles or Helen. I’ve only read the first couple of pages but my first impression is quite good.
BTW, attched you find the second letter for MobileRead's winter contest. * Voici la 2ème lettre pour notre Jeu d'Hiver. * Anbei findet Ihr den 2. Buchstaben für unser Wintergewinnspiel. Good luck, bonne chance, viel Glück! ![]() |

I probably shouldn't admit this but..........
I totally overlooked this thread 3(yes 3!!!) times when looking for the letter. I'm putting it down to being at work and having to scan the forum between duties! ![]() |

As for prose translations, Walter Shrewring has made an excellent (and very readable) translation of "The Odyssey". |

Got 110 pages into 'The Cold Moon' by Jeffery Deaver; but I'm finding the writing clunky and the story unengaging.
Giving up on it and switching to 'Bones of the Hills' by Conn Iggulden - a novel about the life of Genghis Khan. ![]() |

I'm quickly approaching the end of Last Night in Twisted River. About 50 pages to go...still loving every bit of it.

Well, well, if everyone who found the letter leaves a message like this one the letter will be in the middle of the thread soon enough.
![]() ![]() I`m still into Sunborn by Carver but while waiting at my dentist the other day I started reading "Wachtmeister Studer" by the swiss author Friedrich Glauser. Last edited by beachwanderer; 12-02-2009 at 03:20 AM. Reason: Language lapse :o) |
