You're not alone. Before I had my business, I was nowhere on the Net. I mean, NOplace. I had some dork SEO guy bet me that he could find out everything about me on the Net--and he lost. (Given that it was a 4-digit bet, he was not a happy camper.) But then, I had the biz, and lo, ignoring social media was the KOD. (Kiss o'Death). I loathe it--I do.

I've found a few Reddit threads worth reading, but you are correct about the trawling for content. Of course, hell, 95% of the net is that way.

I have to pay close attention--I've actually found myself doing it. I correct it, of course, but still; and the bizarre part is, I don't text. My smartphone doesn't work (mountains) in either my home or my office, so...{shrug}. Never got into the habit of it. But I find in forum posts I will start to type b/c for "because" or FWIW or...it's contagious. Unfortunately so, too.

That is why I almost never go trawling. I visit familiar sites I know will interest me, and there are a few forums where I participate, and tend only to refer to poster's recommended links, or I search (yay! DuckDuckGo!) for very specific topics. The older I get, and each step closer to the grave, the more jealous of my remaining hours on this planet --- I simply don't want to waste any of that time on nonsense.

I don't like Reddit. I spend 95% of my online time on Facebook. I have a great social group on there. I follow alot of authors, bloggers, pages. I stay off the newsfeed because Facebook likes to decide to show the weirdest posts with its crazy algorithms. I prefer total control to what content I see.

I'm not a social media person either. No Facebook or other stuff. I've looked at Reddit to try and figure out the appeal and could not figure out why people like it.

I've recently learned to text but rarely do it and I never use text speak. I can't figure out what most of it means anyway.

I have never seen Reddit. If you want me to see your Facebook, let me know and I will turn on the device that has it on it.
Otherwise forget it.

As to forums, this is the only one I visited. The cooking site turned out to not be worth it.

@pdurrant and @HarryT is there any chance you will starve in 2 years? I heard on another site you might not be able to get food from your usual suppliers.
Or is it some of your media is hyping like our media tends to do?

There is some small chance that food imports from the EU might have tarrifs imposed after the UK leaves. I think it's unlikely to come to that.

That so was not what I heard. I heard you might have to eat washed in bleach chickens and massively hormone injected beef.

I hate to break it to you, but that's the kind of meat most Americans eat.

We'd have to reduce our animal welfare standards to be able to import such stuff. While it's possible that USA trade deals might require us to do that, I doubt it would sell well here.

I know where you are coming from. I saw that same article.
Perhaps you don't know this but most of our beef is not hormone injected. The idea didn't go over here Paul. The media did go wild with it.
One company did that. They sell very little beef. We do read labels.
As far as the bleach laden chickens, they spray a light amount of human safe disinfectant on the chickens before packaging.
Some truth mostly hype.

Oh but it is okay to feed your children horsemeat?
I actually saw that on a news article yesterday. You may not know what meat is being served in schools. There was horsemeat served to school children in Britain.

I did more research and discovered it actually happened in 2013 and was a limited incident.

On food safety standards, I think both our countries vary by the type of food and where we can import from. Not saying better or worse, just different.

Oh and you do know our french fries (your chips) are not all like McDonalds fries.

Shall I vent about it?

I was fine on Monday morning. But around 1pm I felt a bit ill, and at 2pm I decided I had to go home. I manage to make it back home safely on public transport without embarrassing myself or others, but I essentially spent the next day and a half in bed. (I'm glad to say my bedroom has an en-suite.)

Either food poisoning or something like norovirus. I'm much better today, and I think I'll be OK to go in to work tomorrow. We'll see if dinner agreees with me this evening.

Illness - bah. I felt so ill yesterday I hardly read a word, despite being completely idle in bed. Well, most of the time I was asleep, but even when awake I didn't feel like turning a page.

That's one way I can tell I'm better today.

Back to bed now - I don't want to overdo things.

Very rough figures:

80% of USA feedlot cattle are injected with growth hormones.

The USA slaughters around 25 million cattle from feedlots each year, and 5 million from elsewhere.

So about two thirds of USA beef is 'finished' in feedlots injecting growth hormones.


I'm not interested in arguing about the safety of growth hormones in beef production. But you should be aware that it is not true that most of your beef is not hormone injected.

I am getting over food poisoning so it sounds like we have been dealing with something similar. Monday I ate a sandwich for breakfast and thirty minutes later I grew very ill. I too have been in bed for the past two days and today I'm starting to finally feel better but yes take it easy and don't overdo it. I haven't felt like reading either.

I hope we both feel better soon.
