Currently reading The Trowie Mound Murders, book 2 in Marsali Taylor's Shetland Sailing Mysteries Languidly paced with plenty of lovingly detailed descriptions of the people places and words of the region. I'd never heard of Norn before, that sent me down another linguistics rabbit hole, always great fun

Still reading Sons of Sol by Kevin McNally but also started Piranisi on a buddy read. Very weird first chapter.

Started Trading in Danger (Vatta's War #1) by Elizabeth Moon and I am loving it so far. I waited way too long to read Ms. Moon's work - I read The Speed of Dark in high school (and loved it), yet never looked to her other works.

You're in for some great reading, @spacepope. Especially the trilogy The Deed of Paksenarrion. The first in the trilogy is A Sheepfarmer's Daughter, but while you can buy that for (list) $6.99 USD, the whole trilogy is only (list) $8.99 USD. There are other works in that world and building off those characters, but, to my mind, they taper off a bit.

A few days ago I finished:
The Dictionary of Lost Words by Pip Williams. I thought this was excellent. The fictional story of a girl growing up while the Oxford English Dictionary takes shape around her blends neatly into the factual backdrop of Oxford, the OED, the struggle for women's suffrage and the Great War. The observations about language are not subtle, but do form a convincing core to the story. I think the ending was drawn out a bit much, and somewhat overwrought, but it was obvious I had come to care strongly enough that I was affected by it. Something like 4.5/5. Now I am onto something lighter again: A Riddle in Bronze by Simon Haynes, first of his Mysteries in Metal series. So far it's keeping me entertained. Last edited by gmw; 03-28-2022 at 02:31 AM. Reason: Whoops! Hayes -> Haynes. |

I finished...
A Riddle in Bronze by Simon Haynes. A fantasy set in the late nineteenth century with evil spirits and curious metallurgy. This was a fun story, easy to read and certainly kept me entertained ... but I have to say that it never really grabbed me. If you enjoyed the Hal Spacejock series I think you will probably like these, the story is quite different but the writing style is recognisable. For my tastes ... 3.5/5. Next up I am eyeing off the first Dr Ruth Galloway mystery from Elly Griffiths (aka Domenica de Rosa), The Crossing Places. |

Sadly, haven't been able to read much these past couple of months. I picked up a few books, but could hardly get into them. I think it's been four months since I completed a book. Somehow this month I've felt renewed. Picked up Tony Tulathimutte's Private Citizens recently, and it's been a wonderful read. At times, the prose acquires a beautiful cadence and rolls on and on. I'm also trying to read non-fiction on the side, just to keep things interesting. Decided to do some reading related to formal logic, and I'm covering transductive reasoning this week. Formal logic is not as dry as I feared it would be, but it certainly requires me to be mentally focused and agile.

Reading partner got ahead of me on Piranisi so we both finished it. Very weird!
Going to start Dave Grohl's book this evening. |

It was "The Lay of Aotrou and Itroun", many versions of essentially the same poem. More of interest for the textual analysis and dating of the composition than the poem itself, IMO.
Next up: Lost Mars edited by Mike Ashley. Lots of old Mars short stories. |

Then I read Framed! by James Ponti. Well written with a good preteen mystery. I thought the main character was a little too stupid for his age but then again, it's been many years since I was 12. The ending was interesting enough for me to continue with the series at a later time. Not as smartly written as the Spy School series. Rated C [3 stars]. |

While all of my other reading goals are being ground though the sausage grinder of being a managing attorney, I am still sticking with my goal of reading books recommended by my wife. As to that, I started Tasha Shuri's The Jasmine Throne this weekend. In lieu of posting a book blurb, I'll post one of the reviews:
