Step 2 says to reset the kindle. Step 5 says to copy over the file. It doesn't say anywhere whether I'm supposed to do the initial set-up stuff or not.

Nevermind about the safely remove thing, it waited until I was complaining about it and then decided to start working.

Edit: The numbering on the wiki is different. It's steps 2 and 4 here on the first post.

Open the spoiler.
Section entitled: "Make ready"
Which is about three steps prior to step #2.

And you realize from your reading of this site that none of our add-ins are ready for firmware 5.9.<anything>

Maybe that should be clearer then, because it only talks about the third number. It doesn't say "and 5.9 is totally impossible." My third number is less than 7.

You missed my post to you that the KT3 is a special exception.
A KT3, running any firmware version, can be jail broken.
At least that is what has been reported here.

Just follow the directions, it will work.

This seems to be happening:

"If there is not a very noticeable delay and when you check USB storage the file has disappeared, that means this method will not work on the firmware version currently installed on your Kindle."

So... maybe it doesn't work on any version.

Edit: Oops, forgot to say that it won't let me choose "Update Your Kindle." It's grayed out.

I was refuting the claim that it works on "any version," not saying it works on no versions. Nevermind.

I recently picked up a KT3 and decided to try jailbreaking it today, but have the 5.9.2.0.1 update. I get the grey-out issue like the above poster said, regardless of whether I use the file provided from his site or from this site.

Please let me know if there's any way I can assist you in getting a workaround.

And, Amazon, if you're reading this - I really just want a better way to manage my library than your Collections interface

That is indeed a KT3
If you used the image file with KT3 in its name, and the UYK was grayed out, then it is correct that it did not work.
(UYK could also be grayed out if you had the wrong model file - but that did not happen this time.)

I think you are the first to report results for the KT3 running 5.9.x
Prior to that, all earlier KT3 firmware builds could be jail broken.
Evidently, Amazon/Lab126 fixed that oops in their build system.

To be more precise: All now selling KT3 (as of around mid 2017, and later...) that still run their out-of-the-box firmware up to 5.8.10.x could be software jailbroken. KT3 devices which already got a OTA or local update to any user firmware build above 5.8.7.x couldn't.

I fear that the upcoming possibility to install locally needed additional VoiceView languages later wouldn't be based on FB02 file types any longer, at least for fw 5.9.x. Okay, that could clearly be suspected to happen...

Okay, KT3 devices running 5.8.9.0.1 out of the box are still selling here in Good Ol' Germany regularly (at least in general electronic retailer stores), and I could help 6 friends and colleagues of mine jailbreaking them without any difficulties.

If it provides any insight, upon ejecting the KT3 from USB, first thing it does is it deletes the file. The upgrade option is grey possibly because the file isn't there - the space is instantly cleared up, and remounting it shows the file has been deleted.

That is the normal behavior of Amazon/Lab126 protection against a "downgrade attack" (their term in the code comments).
