I sat down with my reader last night, hit the power button and discovered that it was at 5% battery. So I plugged it in and read all of Shigeru Mizuki's Onward Toward Our Noble Deaths, which was on my PTBR reduction goal list. I read all of his epic Showa a few years ago and this could have be put anywhere in the war volumes of that manga. In the afterward, Mizuki states that this was "90%" accurate. He survived the campaign which he wrote about, though he lost an arm in the process.

I enjoyed his Pride and Prejudice and Zombies: Dawn of the Dreadfuls much more than Seth Grahame-Smith's Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, to which it was a prequel. Grahame-Smith's book was more in the spirit of Jane Austin, but the Zombies weren't an improvement. Steve Hockensmith's prequal didn't capture the essence of Jane Austin as well, but it was tons more fun.

Currently reading The Hands of the Emperor by Victoria Goddard. I have no idea any longer who recommended it to me, but she's an author I have not read before. I'm very much enjoying it, however, and if that person was here, my thanks.

3.75/5 for The Canterbury Papers, good enough to keep the sequel on my TBR. Now into Conspirator, book 10 of Cherryh's Foreigner series. Or perhaps I should say book 1 of trilogy 4 of Cherryh's Foreigner series. The 3-book subsets were an inspired choice because 3 is all I can take at a time, and one or 2 "trilogies" a year keeps the stories fresh for me.

4/5 for Conspirator, refreshingly straightforward and light on Bren's navel-gazing. On to Deadly Harvest now, book 4 in the excellent Detective Kubu series

4.5/5 for Deadly Harvest, a very interesting addition to the Kubu series. Deceiver was a solid 4/5, more proof that Foreigner can be fun when Bren's not channeling Hamlet 24/7. So much fun that I had to start Betrayer immediately after finishing Deceiver, to see how this subset ends.

4.25/5 for Betrayer, the subset a great example of Foreigner at its best. Now into Good Girl, Bad Blood, book two of the A Good Girl's Guide to Murder series. The first ended up surprising me and challenging as well as confirming my preconceptions of YA, so the series gets a second go.

2/5 for Good Girl, Bad Blood at The StoryGraph, just AWFUL. I only finished it because I wanted to know "whodunnit". Now back to the early days of the Capetian dynasty with The Rebel Princess, hoping for better things.

Another 2/5 for The Rebel Princess. Very disappointing. The first in the series was an appealing historical mystery with a strong, independent female protagonist, who relied on her wits. In this one, she relies on visions, dreams and the "second sight". Ugh. Now to hope that Time Travelers Never Die by Jack McDevitt breaks my run of deuces

I am currently reading a book called Hana Khan Carries On by Uzma Jalaluddin
I got it on impulse after seeing it on a youtube video described as a similar story to "You've got Mail". It's by a Canadian author, set in Canada and I am enjoying it. |

Finished One Word Kill by Mark Lawrence. Free for Prime members.
I thought this was well written and enjoyable. The main character Nick has leukemia and his experience with chemo was the more interesting and moving (and to me emotional) storyline. The imagery was very descriptive. The sci-fi part was minimal and not the main focus. There's enough here to continue with the series. Rated C [3 stars]. |

I’m reading Troubles by J.G. Farrell, set during the eponymous era in Ireland. It won the Lost Man Booker Prize. A lot of black humor if you like that sort of thing, which I do.
Also, Roman Britain: A New History by Guy de la Bédoyère; new as of 2006, the year it was published. On the dry side but illuminating about what conclusions can be drawn from the archeological evidence. |

Finished Cytonic by Brandon Sanderson and found myself in a small reading slump.
Picked up The Great Gatsby as a quick pick me up read and enjoying it so far. Will finish it today for sure. Need another short book to read next to motivate me even more... |
