I've been reading some short stories by Dennis Etchison from his collection Final Cut. These are horror stories set in LA, mostly non-supernatural. I'd read these many years ago and the best ones still have the power to shock or surprise.

Just finished The Assassination Bureau, Ltd. - an odd unfinished novel by Jack London that I had never heard of - until I saw the movie version on DVD (recommended in Tor's Steampunk Month listings) - which barely resembles the book.
But the book is interesting - and very different for London. |

Hi Y'all!
Dennis, I think you are right and I'll tackle the Endymions. I started Anathem and, although I'm sure it is a masterpiece, I'm not going to finish simply because it takes too much work on my part to not try to make it relevant to western civ history and/or church history and/or current politics. I'm getting lazy! ![]() |

I've had that since it came out in hardback and it has gotten great reviews but every time I pick it up to read it, it seems too hard to start....too complicated...too much work. |

Ages and ages ago, I downloaded "The Accused" by Harold R. Daniels, from Blackmask.
Started reading it by accident, and became engrossed......easily readable in a couple of hours....great story. Told from several points of view. |

Just on the closing pages of *The Book Thief*. At first, I found the writing style and layout not to my taste ... but, gosh, the book is well worth sticking with: Powerful story, powerful characters, picks up pace as you turn the pages -- all in all, one of the best reading experiences of a lifetime. Highly recommended. Cheers. Neil

![]() So far the book is OK, I'm not far into it. I'm also reading "Tempt Me at Twilight" by Lisa Kleypas, which I got from the library. I refused to buy the ebook because the publisher wants to charge $10 for it (it's in paperback), and I refuse to even buy the pbook version because I'm not going to support that. So I got it from the library (yup, I'm sending them an email). On the flip side, I'm very excited because Edward Rutherfurd's "New York" is now $9.99 on Sony (list price of $35). Normally this is the kind of the book I'd get at the library, but apparantly it's quite a big book and I want to have the leisure of time to read it (and I'm not buying the hardcover). |

Just an update on my read of _The Pillars of the Earth_. I am really enjoying it well. It is certainly well written and parts are very suspenseful. The chapter when Jack did what he did (you know if you know) I was really unable to stop reading the chapter even though I was well past bedtime. It is quick and easy to read. To me that is the mark of a good author.

I'm reading 'The Trial' - but was somehow diverted into Gerald Durell's 'Corfu' memoirs. I skip a bit back and forth.
