Actually, I find it *easier* to type in landscape, since I can pretend I am touch typing and use both hands. As long as only one finger touches at a time, I'm fine -- though that means I have to slow down my typing.

Screw Cheerleaders..
You know...I seriously start to wonder, is it ME?
I do NOT understand what the damn problem is with using a proof form. Our proof forms, which, shall we say, are homaged, from Random House, are simple enough. It's a plain Word Table, available in other formats, including RTF, that automatically adds new rows, for items, after 50. (And yes--we get a LOT of proof forms that have more than 50 AA--Author Amendments.) For the print books, you have Page/chapter, and then the OLD, and the NEW. There are then 3 checkboxes (Edit/AA, Formatting, Other). As the bulk of our work is still ebooks, we get the most proof forms therefor. So, WHY? WHY are they SO HARD TO USE, that people have to make up their own go**amned forms, or email, or attachments? I have this one client that has been driving me bats, insistign that the distance from the top-margin of the reader to the chapter head, and then from the chapter head to the text, has to be just SO. That it has to be "slightly greater" in one of those distances, which in print, is easy-peasy, but in MOBI format, not so much. We've gone round and round. AND, earlier in the process, I told him that the guys are ONLY authorized to make edits from proof forms. So, because he has decided that he wnated a bunch of links activated (that had been in his original Word files, but not, obviously, in the print version we made for him), he sends this Word file, with these instructions in them, saying things like "page 23, 7th paragraph from the end of the chapter, same link as was in the Word file," and then, has a list of 8 more, all linking the SAME WORD, to ...? Wherever? I don't understand why the frack it would have been SO HARD to just FOLLOW THE DA** instructions. WHY is that? When I told him that the guys didn't do the links, b/c they weren't in a proof form, he then whined about "how long" it took him to do it. Really? How long do you think it takes for us to try to figure out where the hell that is? Instead of a simple "copy" (the old) paste (into the eReader) click search, and instantly, you're where the edit is? IDGI, as the kids text. (I don't get it). Why do they INSIST on making it harder, and yet, still want the rates that we give for the properly-completed forms? Instead of our hourly? Spoiler:

In answer to your post because some people couldn't pour water out of a boot with the instructions written on the heel. And no it isn't you. It is the profession you have chosen. I can rewrite your pay scale if you would like. Not following directions: $100 an hour 5 hour minimum,. |

Hitch, do you ever get to take a vacation? It sounds like you could really, really use one.
But yes, they should absolutely be charged for not following instructions!! |

Honestly, even when I was working with clients, it was always sort of when I had the money, I didn't have the time, and when I had the time, I had zip for money. I had a vacation (you guys aren't going to believe this, I know), in 1988, in the European Riv (Italian-French Riviera), for 10 days; I took a week, and went to the WEG (World Equestrian Games) in 2010, b/c I knew folks who were competing, and who had horses there--but it was cut short, firstly, because the lady I took with had to leave early but more so because my Gran died, (I know, I know, this sounds Dickensian, but I swear, it's true), and I had to fly back North to take care of her estate matters. Those are my vacations. Since I was living in Europe, in the early/mid 70's. LOL. I guess I am a bit fried. The good thing is, though, I really remember 'em! :-) Hitch |

I need a vacation. Oh wait, in 2 weeks I'm going on one! I don't care if everything at work falls down around my ears. Or my coworkers' ears.
Seriously, if you don't want to work for us anymore, just tell us. Don't just not show up for 3 days and not answer your phone and, oh yes, your emergency contact doesn't get back to us either. Something had damned well better be wrong because, if not, you're gonna have a problem when I find you! |

My wife and kids are in NYC for the day*, bonding over a visit to the Met and then an evening show. I went out to a couple of stores to get stocked up -- we're feeding two young adults this week.
When I got home I put a burger on the stove to cook for dinner. This is not a problem for me. As a former stay-at-home dad I used to do all of the cooking. These days, with the kids usually out and just us at home, my wife shares the dinner cooking chore. Anyway, when I lifted the pan's cover to flip the hamburger there was a flash, but the frying pan didn't catch fire. Instead, the filter in the range hood above it caught fire. I turned off the stove, then the vent fan. It was a small fire, but had my full attention, so I called 911. While I was on the line with 911 I smothered the flames with a wet kitchen towel. The operator suggested someone come out to check things out just in case, and that sounded like a good idea -- best to let a pro check something like this out. I expected they'd send someone out with an infrared heat gun in one of the Fire Dept. SUVs. And, in fact, an SUV showed up in minutes and a guy came in with an IR heat gun ... ... His car was followed by two more SUVs, two utility pick-up trucks, and two fire engines. All with flashing lights and spotlights trained on the house. No sirens, thank goodness. (We live at the end of a long dead end -- I expect to be explaining this to my neighbors for the rest of the week.) The crew came through and checked everything out very thoroughly. Very, very thoroughly. The Fire Department Captain was there -- I know, because we're friends. I know his son from Cub Scouts, years ago. He's in the Dept. now, and he was there, too. ![]() So, anyway, I was right, the fire was completely out. But it's good to have it professionally verified. Cleaning up the stove area under the burned out hood only took about ten minutes. * In all honesty, if this had to happen I'm glad it happened to me, not the wife or kids. And I'm also happy they weren't home for it. Last edited by cromag; 07-20-2017 at 01:08 AM. |

I wonder why old people in the south of the Netherlands insist on listening to German Schlagers incessantly and without end.
If there's one crime for which I'd like to see capital punishment reinstated in the EU, it would be the production, distribution, or playing of Schlager music. Seriously, there's no end to my hatred towards it. Last edited by Katsunami; 07-22-2017 at 12:06 PM. |
