Good morning, everyone! It was this day in 1918 that the first known case of the so-called Spanish flu was first observed at Fort Riley, Kansas. My father was stationed there when I was a kid, and Junction City (the town in which Ft.Riley was located) was my very first experience living in a foreign country. They talked differently, ate different foods, even looked different than any place I'd seen before. I had occasion to pass through Junction City, Kansas again when I was in my mid-twenties, and it was still pretty alien...

I've got a big mug of Taylors of Harrogate's "Assam" tea this morning, and a plate of 'stuff' from the food lady. Tastes pretty good... no idea what it is, but I like it!

I had to take many classes and trainings at Riley. I hated the post except the married officers quarters. They were lovely examples of history. Oh! And I was pretty fond of the museum as well.

On one of my deployments there, in the summer of course,
I was issued the "new" BDUs, camouflage uniforms. Those suckers were heavy and dense. We were working on replacing a couple of miles of cable in the overwhelming July weather. It was close to 100, and the humidity was similar. My climbing gear was the aforementioned new uniform, linemans gloves which were a combination of heavy canvas and leather, our combat helmets, and linemans boots. I'd been up one pole for about 45 minutes sweating my ass off as miserable as could be. After awhile I sort of noticed I had stopped sweating. If my brain hadn't been so scrambled I would have realized I was in trouble. I woke up in an ambulance. Ever since then I've had fairly severe problems with hot, especially humid weather.

No, I was only ever there with my reserve unit which happened to be a military combat support hospital. A few of the docs were allowed private vehicles because they were in doctors without borders and Para rescue ops. They needed to roll ASAP
