BTW, keeping anything important in a single 20gb file scares the heck out me. Maybe I'm just old.
I must be old too, because it scares me too.

Probably. :-)
But the thinking behind is sound, I think: What is the best way to preserve data in a way that it possible can be read in 100 years? In a stupid .txt file, wrapped with some xml. It is based on the 'SIARD' standard. (Software Independent Archiving of Relational Databases). But when you have a table with 17 million rows, 44 columns, you get a .xml file with 17 * 44 million lines. + some overhead. I have a file from another table, that is like this, but only with 13 million rows. That one is 25GB. So I think this one will nearing the 30gb, when sql-server is finished writing it, in a couple of days. :-)

Meh. Lots of superstition around that discussion.

But even if we accept the xml format as a given, I'd feel l better with 300 100MB files that someone will need to concatenate in a hundred years if needed....

Of course with my add-in and the default S&R rules document most of the hard-hyphens would be removed as well. It will actually use the width of the page and the length of the line to see if it is a real hyphen or a manual one.

Somehow, I knew that would get filed away for future reference.

Word has a truly brain-dead version of regex, but you work with what you have. Personally, I'd do this as a macro and assign it to a control-key sequence, allowing you to verify as you did it that you hadn't just inadvertently created 'jackin-the-box' or some such.

IAC, may your weekend bring you no annoying idiots, and nice weather. (Neither of which is particularly likely, but hey, as a well-wish, not bad. )

You know, for the life of me, I cannot get the ePUBTools to "stick." I literally don't know what does it. I got it installed in Word, everything was groovy, and then, at some point--it disappeared, AGAIN. I've told my various and sundry AVPs that it's cool, so it shouldn't be getting removed that way. I wonder if there's a conflict, do you think, between the macro and the ePT?

IF I can get it running again, I'm going to try that. It's been so long since I was able to use EPT, I actually forgot that. (Or...I have an old version of 2003 running. Sh*t, maybe I'll bring that up and put EPT in that...)

Oh, believe me, I' know. I've tried using it, more than a few times.

Oh, thanks, but I'm here tomorrow, too, of course. This week has been particularly long--as of my leaving on Weds night, I'd already been here 39 hours. I confess, gang..I'm flagging a bit.

Not that I can recommend from personal use. My own assumption is that files that big are probably errors, and that the creation process should have broken things down into manageable chunks.

You didn't specify what OS you are using, but poke around on TextEditors.org, and do a search for "large files". There are an assortment of editors whose claim to fame is being able to slurp up huge files successfully.

No, just sensible. If you are using a monolithic 20GB file for archiving, it's a good bet you're doing it wrong.

fum didn't specify what the source was, and there may be reasons for doing it that way, but I suspect ignorance on the part of whoever designed the archiving procedure.

Me too!! I was going through a couple bags of ice a week. I saved my pennies and bought a counter top ice maker. I love it! Makes little bullet shaped ice pellets and they are perfect for crunching. Nice and soft. It was about $100, which is a lot, but when I added up the cost of bags of ice it won't take long to pay for itself. But ice is expensive here, might be way cheaper in other areas.

10 lbs for a dollar here if you use the water mill. Some stores charge up to $2.50 for 10 lbs.

For the vast majority of what I do, a plain text editor is fine. I simply replace Notepad with something else. There are many Notepad replacements out there. The one I use is an open source product called Notepad2-mod It's a fork of an open source product called Notepad2 by Florian Balmer. Notepad2 uses the Scintilla edit control, and offers syntax highlighting for an assortment of programming languages, code folding, and an assortment of other features. It can be set via a registry hack to replace standard Windows Notepad, and I do so. It invokes as close to instantly as makes no difference.

Which apps are you running? On my Android tablet, I run a freeware office suite called WPS Office+PDF from a Chinese vendor. (Ad supported, but so far they are unobtrusive and don't get in my way.) It handles Word Documents, Excel Spreadsheets, Power Point presentations and PDF files (though I use something else for PDFs and avoid PowerPoint like the plague.) It opened plain text files the last I looked, but I have several dedicated plain text editors installed as well. My usual choice fort plain text is 920 Editor, another open source product.

MS does have freeware official Word and Excel apps for Android. I looked at them and they technically run, but are big and assume you have a fast and powerful device.

I'd was indeed speaking of the official Microsoft Word for iOS and Android. Other apps that open and edit word docs may well also open plain text files, but not MS Word for iOS and Android, at least not the last time I checked. And I have removed MS Word from my Android phone for exactly the reason you mentioned: it's huge. It's a bloated tic of a program that slows down my entire phone. It plays nicer on my iPad.
