When the Kobo ereader was released in May 2010 for $149, the equivalent Amazon 6" Kindle ereaders were priced at $299 for the K2 and $279 for the K2i. Perhaps you want to cling to the belief that without the introduction of the Kobo ereader, Amazon would still have dropped the price of the Kindle 3 introduced in July, 2010 to $139 for the WiFi only model or $189 for the 3G model.

According to several items at the time, the original pricing for the K3 WiFi was going to be $299 so I find it hard to believe that Amazon out of the kindness of Jeff Bezos's heart would have decided to drop the price to below that of the Kobo ereader if the Kobo ereader had not been introduced. Oddly during that same time period in July, 2010 B&N dropped the price of the original Nook (the one with the eInk & LCD screens) from $259 to $149 though that did involve losing the 3G capability.

As the NYT article referred to it, a price war.

But that doesn't really fit the continual narrative that Amazon sells ereaders as a loss leader?

The advert "subsidised" ones may be close to cost price. I'm not sure they would risk generally subsidising them, and certainly in 2007 they didn't, though the 3G connection on the models with it was / is subsidised, hence limits on it for non-Amazon activities.

What originally was a loss leader were some of the NYT bestsellers being sold for (I think) $9.99.

This might be slightly off-topic to post here, but a few days ago, Epubor released two new products for the Japanese market: Epubor Kinoppy Mate and Epubor Mynavi Unlimited Mate.
Kinoppy is the eBook store of Books Kinokuniya, which is also known in the West, and their successful crack is the latest rebuttal to the common claim that they actually lack the ability to crack DRM.

However, I tested the app in its trial version and found that while it could pull eBooks from an Android emulator, it couldn't actually detect the eBooks.
According to another Japanese user who inquired about this, it's a bug, and they plan to release a fixed version soon.

Now then, BookFab Kindle Converter has just released a new version.

To clarify simply, they still haven't cracked the latest KFX DRM, but they have improved some quality-of-life features like offline DRM removal and preserving the original file format.
Also, the EPUB conversion feature works only for KFX and does not work for KF8...

Furthermore, contrary to their explanation, my K4PC is version 2.3.0 (70673), and this version works with BookFab.

I think they were rather stupid to release BookFab based on a loophole that Amazon would eventually close.
