I probably would've gone for this but I just used the offer of $99 for a year of Audible and a free Dot.

With the extra $30 savings and the $10 gift card we're supposed to get next week, the price of a new Kindle is almost covered. Especially if it goes on sale for mother's day....

Blood Kiss (publisher's website)

Black Dagger Legacy (book 1 of 3)

The legacy of the Black Dagger Brotherhood continues in this gripping spin-off series from #1 New York Times bestselling author J.R. Ward.

Paradise, blooded daughter of the king’s First Advisor, is ready to break free from the restrictive life of an aristocratic female. Her strategy? Join the Black Dagger Brotherhood’s training center program and learn to fight for herself, think for herself...be herself. It’s a good plan, until everything goes wrong. The schooling is unfathomably difficult, the other recruits feel more like enemies than allies, and it’s very clear that the Brother in charge, Butch O’Neal, a.k.a. the Dhestroyer, is having serious problems in his own life.

And that’s before she falls in love with a fellow classmate. Craeg, a common civilian, is nothing her father would ever want for her, but everything she could ask for in a male. As an act of violence threatens to tear apart the entire program, and the erotic pull between them grows irresistible, Paradise is tested in ways she never anticipated--and left wondering whether she’s strong enough to claim her own power...on the field, and off.

Yes, it is. I suppose that the Kindle is the original Kindle reader, which, I think, is the one just prior to PaperWhite?

The renewal rate of $149.99/yr., after the first year doesn't sound bad, either. That's $12.46/mo. The gotcha is that you have to pay in advance--Audible gets to use your money every month until the end of the term.

KyBunnies, I think that you should get one of the deals for each one of your bunnies, so that they can read The Velveteen Rabbit, Peter Cottontail, and all of those other books that they love so much!

I was recently in north central Ky. for nearly four months, and I didn't see a single rabbit, or set of rabbit tracks! You must already have rescued all of them there. ha

It would be the current model basic Kindle (also known as Kindle, 8th generation)...

I'm going to call tomorrow to see if they have any good deals for current members. We used to be able to get a heavily discounted gadget every other year for listening to audiobooks.

That barely counts as a 'gotcha.'. Not only is that almost always the case when an annual option is offered at a discount compared to a monthly option just about anywhere, but Audible gives you all your credits up front, so you have the option of 'using your money' the very first day if there happen to be twelve books you want to spend it on.

Yes, LORD EMPEROR. (if you don't know why I'm saying that, please reference post #2994).
Please forgive thy humble servant for his rash and fallacious blathering.

Yep, I made a bad assumption. I assumed that you had to pay up front and the credits still would be doled out to you on a month-by-month basis. That seems to be the way that it usually is with most deals where you pay up front (I'm excluding, now, audiobook memberships, because of the information that you gave); the only benefit to the customer is having a smaller amount to pay each month.* Genuine thanks for the correction.

However:
1. In practice, is anyone going to use all 12 of his or her credits immediately after buying a membership? What would be the point of burning through 12 credits right away, and have none for the rest of the year? A person can't have more than one membership at one time, so he/she would be out of luck the rest of the year. Audible may not parcel them out by the month, but the customer is going to do that for himself or herself.
2. Things can be "gotchas," even if "everyone" is doing it--i.e., it is standard industry-wide practice. We hear all of the time about lawmakers, attorney generals, and courts putting the kibosh on those such "gotchas."

* Having customers pay up front and offering them a small discount, on a percentage basis, for doing so, is usually advantageous to a company--a large company, especially. They get money right away to invest or use for various projects (building new offices, manufacturing new products, etc.). Too, having a lot of cash allows them to invest in things that yield a far better return than the small, individual investors can invest in. Thirdly, it improves "cash flow" which, among perhaps other things, has a lot of benefits when the figures appear on company financial statements--stockholders are happier, potential investors are more likely to invest in the company, investment advisors are more likely to recommend the stock to a client, etc.

I’m on a 24 book annual membership plan (£109) because it’s considerably cheaper than any other membership. Once my credits are used I’m always given the option to buy three more credits for £11. This happens repeatedly. One year I think I bought the extra credits about a dozen times. Plus there’s also the option to renew your membership early. I’m not sure at what point this option comes up but it’s always on my membership options when I’ve gone to cancel. I think it’s well worth paying in advance as the credits work out at nearly half price.

Oh sure it's advantageouss to them, that's why they do it. I just meant it's a rather expected and common practice that gives you clear value in exchange for doing it, not what I'd call a 'gotcha' which I interpret as an unexpected catch that reduces the expected value to you.

And certainly some folks, like the TV and phone industry, do it differently, with contracts and ETF penalties in exchange for doling out their services monthly at a lower price.

As for who would spend all twelve credits at once? I guess anyone who wanted 12 books. I know TM is big into series, so I could see someone like him doing it. My wife happens to be waiting for upcoming releases, otherwise she would probably do it as well. As mentioned a above, the membership would then still give you the benefit of being able to buy discounted credits as needed, and would give you the same value as the credit-less Listener Light membership: lower prices and sale offers.
