Finished both Darkling Child and Sorcerer's Daughter by Terry Brooks and narrated by Simon Vance. Good stories, but not my favorite arc. Currently listening to Mirror Dance by Lois Bujold and narrated by Grover Gardner. Excellent so far!

Finished up The Steel. Right now, I'm leaning towards Peace Talks but it really depends on my mood when I hop in the car.

Done with Mirror Dance by Lois McMaster Bujold and narrated by Gardner Grover. Excellent, but be aware that there are some scenes of torture.
Have now moved on to the Black Elfstone, by Terry Brooks and narrated by Simon Vance. It's the first of the Fall of Shannara quadrilogy (or tetralogy or quartet - do we have a preference here on Mobileread??). |

I'm on Fool's Errand, I believe the second to last Elderlings book. I'm struggling a little bit with this trilogy for a few reasons, but mainly because because the reader is tolerable at best. Everyone except the main character and one little girl gets a vaguely Slavic accent :/

I started the novel Miss Benson's Beetle yesterday, finding Juliet Stevenson's narration outstanding!

Listening to Peace Talks, I had forgotten how good James Marsters is as a narrator. A top flight voice actor makes a huge difference.

Since I last posted, I completed the Black Elfstone, The Skaar Invasion, the Stiehl Assassin and finally the Last Druid by Terry Brooks. Simon Vance did an excellent narration of all 4 books. Now have completed the Shannara series except for the book of shorts he is putting out.
So, after listening to a couple of novellas that were so-so, I moved on to book 5 of Terry Brook's Kingdom of Landover series called Witch's Brew. Narrated by Dick Hill. Not really getting into the story mostly because Ben's daughter grows from newborn to 10 years old in 2 years. I've never been able to wrap my head around that sort of device. The rest of the story has been good, so I keep going. If you have a kid, Zero G by Dan Wells was actually pretty good. Lots of issues if you are an adult, but I can see an 8-10 year old eating this one up. Audible original a little over 4 hours long. |

I'm on Assassin's Fate now, the last book of Elderling Realms, and both the story and narration have improved considerably. It's the same reader, but he's reined in his character voicing - maybe he read the reviews on the previous two books. The middle book of this trilogy suffered from dull settings, circular conversations, and extreme thick-wittedness on the part of the main character, though there was at least one very compelling scene. This last book so far is much more interesting as a travelogue and the heroes are being a bit more competent (with some notable exceptions), and I've heard it has a good ending.

Eventually I will get to the rest of this series. I listened to the Farseer Trilogy but the only other audios I have are the Tawny Man trilogy. Have all the rest in ebook. She hasn't published anything in several years. Taking a break or retired?

I listen on my Tap all the time using a kind of cheat, and the method would probably work on my Echo and Echo Show as well. I start the book on the Audible app on my smartphone. Wait for things to update, then tell Alexa on my Tap to play Audible. When I'm finished, I return to my smartphone, go to last location read, and bookmark it as a precaution because the system isn't perfect.

I think I'll put them down after this one and maybe backtrack to the Liveships and Rainwilds books sometime later. Not sure what's up next, but I still have quite a bit left on Assassin's Fate.

Thank You for Coming to Hattiesburg read by the author, comedian Todd Barry. Had not heard of him until now, appreciate his dry sense of humor, so audio a good fit.

The new year opens with me reading four audiobooks:
• Audible: Great Minds of the Western Intellectual Tradition by The Great Courses, narrated by various professors • Chirp: Leaves of Grass by Walt Whitman, narrated by Mel Foster (reread of a Kindle book) • Hoopla: The Mysterious Mr. Quinn by Agatha Christie, narrated by Hugh Fraser • Librivox: The Children of Odin by Pádraic Colum, narrated by Elizabeth Klett |

Finished up Peace Talks yesterday. Very well done. James Marsters really is top notch.
The book had a different feel to it that when I read the eBook, I also noticed different things more. Maybe it's because I already know how it's going to end, so I'm noticing the nuances more, or maybe it's just how Marsters reads it. The question now is do I go directly to Battle Ground (because it really is one long book) or do I break it up with something else. Decisions, decisions... |

In my list of books read at the end of the year, don't be surprised when count the Great Minds of the Western Intellectual Tradition, 3rd Edition by The Great Courses as two books. I figure it's only fair, considering the audio portion is 43 hours and 41 minutes, and the accompanying course syllabus is a 421 page PDF.
But it's a very good course. A very good course |
