I have a kindle PPW3(2015) with current fw 5.8.7. after downgrade to 5.7.4 and try to jailbreak with ";installHtml". It reboot the kindle but I got stuck with error code 007 when trying to apply the hot fix
Finally I reset my kindle and try to start again with ";installHtml" step but nothing happen. It not reboot or flash any more
Does there anyone know why I stuck in this step? and how to get through it. Thank in advance!
P/s: after try to update fw to 5.7.4 again, It seem I got it through Thank anyway. So which fw I should come up to?

Newly bought KV shipped with 5.8.10 (never wifi on, never registered) successfully downgraded to the factory 5.5.0.

Moreover, newly bought PW3 G090G105 shipped registered with 5.8.10 successfully downgraded to the factory 5.7.4.

It seems that for the time being any new device has a chance to be jailbroken.

Are you register your your PW3 and still successfully downgraded to the factory 5.7.4? What language did you set to? Did you reset your PW3 before downgrade? I registered and reset a brand new PW3 before downgraded to 5.7.4 but killed it after I did the DO_FACTORY_RESTORE as it is in the boot loop state.

The situation is really unclear, as we see different firmwares even with the same numbers.
Sometimes downgrading to the factory firmware takes over 10 minutes, and unpatient users interrupt the process, resulting to failure.

With all of the changes in the past year to the Kindles, the first post has become impossible to maintain.
So it is now hidden behind a spoiler, with a warning as the only visible part.

I do not think I will have the time to spend on this forum this year after I finish the support work for the KOA2 jail break that I am working on now.

While I still consider the war with Amazon over who owns the behavior of the device after the sale a very important question for our society, I don't have the time or mental acuity to continue this fight.

So in the case of a few pissed off Kindle owners VS a billionaire, the billionaire wins by default.

I have a several years old Kindle Voyage sitting at 5.8.11 that I wanted to jb in order to read epub files natively. I've been scouring the net for days and I'm getting conflicting information on what can and cannot be jb'd and/or downgraded in order to be jbroken.

To confuse matters further, I read in one forum/article that the only directories I should see when I connect it to my pc is 'documents'. Fine, I see that but I also see '.active_content_sandbox' and 'system'. Does this mean I am already jailbroke (or whatever the correct term is)? If not can anyone anywhere point me to the information as to whether or not this can be jailbroken? I am I reading sites claiming that ALL can be one way or the other but reading elsewhere this isn't true. Hence, the land of confusion.

I joined this forum in 2014 and thereafter had massive health issues for a couple of years which involved some degree of event memory loss so it is possible that I did something back then or shortly thereafter that succeeded but failed to add necessary secondary programs to fully realize the potential in the device.

Any helpful remarks or specific questions for me would be appreciated!

Sorry but I don't think you can jailbreak at this time.

5.8.11 is fairly recent, it may have updated itself since you last worked with it.
PS: Do not let it update to the newer 5.9.<anything>
If you do not now have a directory named:
update.bin.tmp.partial
visible at the top level of USB storage - put it there to block OTA updates.

The /documents directory is normally the only one of interest to the user, all books and documents have to be put there.
The other directory names you mention are provided (and maintained) by the Kindle's system.

If you have directories named:
/extensions
/mrpackages
then you did at least start to install some of our add-ins.
The "jail break" itself does not add anything to what is visible in USB storage.
(Although other things that can be added in do - and on a KV you will always have the two I mentioned above.)

For a KV running 5.8.11, that is true for certain, I can not think of any exceptions to the general rules for a KV.

You did not post anything about your "Paperwhite" (there are 30 known models of "Paperwhite") -
But look at it (keep it away from wifi while looking) - perhaps it is the one you where modifying or perhaps it can be jail broken now.
use the first six characters of the serial number and this table:

to identify which "Paperwhite" model you have.

22. Safely Remove the Kindle USB storage

40. Copy KUAL-KDK-2.0.azw2 to /documents.

As mentioned above, you could have really good chances to jb exactly this out-of-the-box fw 5.8.10.1.

Your how-to list is really fine, except following remarks:
a) in step #16, use the "nomax" hotfix.
b) skip steps #20 to #24 - the hotfix is already installed and will properly do its job in step #29, i.e. after upgrading to the really recommendable fw 5.8.11.

In the Voyage that I have, I have added the recommended folder -- does the same apply to the Paperwhite?

I have added the other two directories only yesterday as I was contemplating and prepping to do the jailbreak -- which, if I am understanding things here, isn't actually possible. Sigh. I hate it when I can't use devices to their potential because of some corporate group-think.....

As to the Paperwhite, I can look up the model but I gave it to my wife when I got the Voyage. I can't remember -- but I think -- I jailbroke it before I had the Voyage but I'd have to pry it out of her hands long enough to look. She's not particularly interested in my messing about with it, as it happens.

So, *IF* I can't to the JB on the Voyage, I guess my next best option is to become intimately familiar with Calibre . . . .

Again, thanks -- I'll try to stop by here more often and maybe someone someday will find a way to set us all free . . .

So I purchased a Kindle PW3 about 6 months ago and jailbroke it right away. I haven't messed with the firmware/software since. My device is running firmware 5.8.1.

The OP states a jailbreak is confirmed to survive updating up to 5.8.11. Does that apply for any jailbreak or only for the method described in this thread? (No idea whether I jailbroke using instructions from this thread or some other one.) Can I just grab a firmware and do an update normally or do I need to perform extra steps to preserve the jailbreak? Are there any compelling feature additions for me to want to jump to a newer firmware? Or should I just chill with 5.8.1 and not bother messing with anything?

Just in case install the latest version of hotfix bin from @coplate's snapchots thread, then do the firmware update.
As for compelling features: with fw 5.8.11 you'll gain ability to change boldness of fonts (not available for books in mobi format!) and 13 instead of 8 predefined sizes.

Avoid firmware 5.9.x.x OTA update since you plan to play with hacks.

Thanks. Unfortunately, I can't try it now. Have to wait for a replacement. Before anyone ask, no, I didn't kill it. I found a hardware fault when I was tempted to give it a go when I saw this reply. Seems like all the successful JB of 5.8.10.x are either unregistered or pre-registered when they receive it. All the one that I read also used update_PW3_5.7.4_initial.bin instead of update_pw3_factory_5.8.9.0.1.bin. Did anyone actually JB 5.8.10.x PW3 using update_pw3_factory_5.8.9.0.1.bin? Anyone know where I can find KindleTool v1.6.5? I can only find v1.6.4.

The version number does not get bump'd until the snapshot becomes the release.

Until then, versions newer than the last release (v1.6.4 for example) are marked by a sequential snapshot id to show how much newer the snapshot is than the most recent release.
(And for people who have trouble with <version>-<snapshot id>, there is also a build date included - five weeks ago is as recent as you get right now - unless you clone the public repo and build it yourself).

That is just the way the author does such things.
(things can become a bit arbitrary in an all volunteer project)
