Well I thought I would just finish up Fire & Blood by George R.R. Martin and get back to the Dragon Treasure series by Guy Donovan, but Fire & Blood is going on forever! It's good though. It reads like a historical chronicle telling the background of the Targaryns and how they came to power.

Gulliver's Wife by Lauren Chater. I found this difficult to rate...
As a work of historical fiction I thought this was very well done, obviously well researched and detailed in its exploration of the life of women in London of the early eighteenth century. But it was also quite depressing; it was not until nearing the end that there were any hints that their life could be anything but hard ... Spoiler:
.
As a work of fiction with a link to Jonathan Swift's satire, Gulliver's Travels, the result is more equivocal. Lemuel Gulliver is almost the non-entity here that his wife is in Swift's novel; not much more than a generic eighteenth century sailor to fill the role of mostly absent spouse whose return is very disruptive. I ended up giving it a 4/5 because it impressed me enough that I will be looking for more from this author. Last edited by gmw; 05-11-2021 at 07:27 AM. Reason: Suddenly realised I'd included a spoiler of sorts, sorry about that. |

A new Penric and Desdemona novel dropped from Lois McMaster Bujold -- The Assassins of Thasalon. This will, of course, disrupt my reading plans while I switch to it.

I'm currently getting my Nautical groove on with Madhouse at the End of the Earth. A new release (subtitled "The Belgica's Journey into the Dark Antarctic Night") by Julian Sancton. A non-fiction account of a nearly forgotten polar expedition.

I set myself a limit of 25 books maximum to read for this month, so now that I've read 24, I'm going to use the rest of the month to read Ajay Anand's Hindi translation of The Jungle Book , something I have kept putting off.

Then I read a recent freebie, Island Magic by Lyndon Hardy. He's the author of the Master of the Five Magics series, and this is set in the same universe. It was OK, but a bit too much existential angst and not enough magic for my taste really. Next up: Soul by Tobsha Learner. This was a Tor.com freebie from way back in July 2008! I must admit I'm not impressed so far, at 40% through. If it doesn't improve by 50% I'm abandoning it. |

After the last slightly depressing story I went looking for something lighter and found it in:
Second Course by Simon Haynes. Second book in the sci-fi comedy series Hal Spacejock. Much like the first really: a light and funny spoof of the space opera genre. Entertaining but not enthralling. 3/5. |
