I didn't think you were suggesting that; I felt you were just reporting it. I guess I took an opportunity to gripe. On the brighter side, I have seen retailers use better anti-theft devices, like tcv mentioned. CompUSA has their own tech support department in each store, so if any malicious customer locks the BIOS, they have someone in-store who has the skills to fix it.

Stopped at my local Border's to buy the red cover for my wife's reader ... They aren't carrying the reader. They said the nearest Border's that was carrying them was about 60 miles away. Not a good sign...

Who locks down the device? Or, rather, who's responsibility is it to do it? For instance, I have seen PCs that are pretty well locked down. Task Manager is disabled, for instance, through all key-combos. And if you logout of the account, you can't get back in because you don't know the password. You may not be able to open a command-prompt either.
There's lots of ways to get around things, but some of them are pretty well locked down. So, who does that? Staples? HP? (If it's an HP.) |

Went by Borders again last night. Someone has cracked the screen on the display model!! But looks like they got in a new shipment of readers. The floor manager said they are selling better than she expected at that price point.

Did the eink spill on the floor?!
![]() I went to Fry's Electronics today in Houston on the corner of I-45 and Beltway 8. They had the Reader in a Sony kiosk along with their little wireless media device and that hyper-small laptop they have. I suppose they were available but this was my first visit to a Fry's ever and I was trying to get through the thing. My GOD they're huge!!! ![]() |

The ones in the Bay Area of California are actually bigger than that one, believe it or not, tcv. The first time I visited one out there I had facial cramps for hours afterwards, from the manic grin, you understand. I can feel one coming on now, just thinking about Fry's.

If you don't mind.. What was the decor they use. Here is an Atlantis theme. Also did they have anything beyond the Reader and the cradle. |

That one on I45 near Beltway 8 is an oilfield theme, derricks, donkey pumps and the like.
The one in North San Jose is kind of an Aztec pyramid-temple type thing, the Santa Clara one used to be a general circuitry thing, but when they moved they didnt' really go with a theme, more like a nice hotel lobby. I don't remember the theme of the other one that I went to in the Bay Area (in Campbell, maybe?), and the ones in Arlington, TX and Mesquite, TX don't really have a theme that I recall, but I don't get to them very often. As you can see, I really like Fry's -- I have to visit them when I see them on trips. ![]() Out of curiosity, where's "here," Nightwing? I might like to see that Atlantis theme someday. ![]() |

I didn't know what you meant by "decor." I thought you meant the kiosk. I didn't realize that all Fry's have different themes.

I remember one I went to in Orange County, CA. It seemed to have an Indiana Jones theme.

Yep after the San Marcos one they desired to do themes... Or so I heard.. Saw the Kiosk today.... Hard to use. Does lock it down pretty good. But here is a rumor... Asked one of the sales people about the spare case. Looks like the reason why cases have dried up or no replacements is the following. There will be 4 cases. Not the three now... Two soft. Two HARD ^_^ The soft Will have at least protection for the screen and I gathered for the controls! ^_^ This is what he heard from the Sony rep and the rep will be back to do a walk through on the unit with maybe more info on the possible new cases. Will keep checking! |

Nuts, Nightwing, you're talking about a Fry's employee, right? They're positively legendary for having no idea what they're talking about. Most of 'em wouldn't know a clue if it ran up and bit them on the leg. It's rather sad, really.
![]() You can't even trust some of them to tell you where the store's restroom is! I'm not saying he couldn't be the one in the lot who knows what he's talking about, but I wouldn't trust a documented statement (let alone a rumor) from one of those guys without two other notorized sources, insider information from the company under discussion, and confirmation from a Recognized International Inspection Agency. ![]() I'm not saying I have any idea what the real situation is, but I'd only ever bet against whatever a Fry's-Guy told me. ![]() |

Decided to go for the extra warranty today and ask the lady on the phone doing the warranty. Nope just the three she said but if they did release would be in the Jan-Feb range. And would pop up on the web site. Except for that mp3 accessory case from Wallmart I put the reader and its case inside. Im still hopping they get the current extra cases figured out. Fry's
We got a little bit of everything, and know next-to-nothing. --- I still like Radio Shack's. You've got questions? We've got shrugs. |

Some years ago (oh, my ... 10 years ago) I had an older lady (late 50's to early 60's) at one Rat-Shack try to tell me that I couldn't use a 22 AWG 3 conductor wire to make a custom extension cord/connector to hook my TV to my Stereo because it was intercomm wire (says so right there on the spool label, sir!).
I finally told her that I was going to buy it and if it didn't work it was my bad, not hers. I felt like saying, "I've got an M.S. in Electronics Engineering that says copper is copper -- what d'you got, lady?" ![]() It worked fine, BTW (and I'm glad in retrospect that I answered with option 'A'). ![]() |
