I clicked th link to the free smashwords edition of One Year War and it did take me to the free download page for that book.

Glorya, Free books change quickly, so it's best to always check the price. I don't believe the first msg in the thread is being updated, so also check the end of the thread, rather than the first.

some of these books are free for mere hours. you have to be on the ball to go after the free books. free book hunting is indeed a full contact sport. someone is going to get dirty!

Also, for those outside the US, a free book here is often not free there. There are two reasons for that:

(1) if Amazon is the seller, they add $2 for all international customers (presumably to cover fees and added costs of doing business there, including subsidizing the often much higher costs of wireless delivery) and must charge VAT on the full price (the amount depends on your country)

(2) if one of the big five is the seller, they often don't reduce the costs for other countries (I suspect they can set the price individually for every country on each book or do a single "US" vs "international" price). Which leaves those outside the US out of their promotions. I suspect one reason that do this is that a few nations actual prohibit "sales" pricing on books or ebooks (and you know who you are), rather than simply not wanting to promote their books internationally (or perhaps they feel that in the EU, people haven't gotten used to lower prices and they don't want them to).

But yes, one big reason is that sales pricing comes and goes. Sometimes a certain number of books has been set as the sales price, but also sometimes the price is in error (Amazon will honor it, though, so long as you get it while it is sale priced) and it rises quickly once someone notices it.

The Minister's Wooing, by Harriet Beecher Stowe, is free courtesy of publisher Penguin Classics (which is not the same as the Penguin whose books are still missing from the Kindle store).

Milrose Munce and the Den of Professional Help, by Douglas Anthony Cooper, is a single penny in the Amazon Kindle store. Aimed at young readers (age 9-12), this one has only five-star reviews (you can't see them on the Kindle book page, but under the paperback version.

No one except Milrose Munce knows that ghosts of former students live in his school. Not only is Milrose aware of these ghouls – he’s on a first-name basis with all of them. Of course, some are more likeable than others: the third floor is the home to nearly all of his good friends. Most of them – like Imploded Ig, Deeply Damaged Dave, and Toasted Theresa – were the victims of science experiments gone wrong though they do manage to maintain a sense of humour about their demise. Then there are the ghost athletes who lurk in the basement – a pretty disagreeable group, the majority of them having died after a particularly clumsy manoeuvre on the school’s sports field.

After Milrose is given yet another detention for offering his teacher an answer that was just a bit too clever, his life takes an unexpected turn.
