That is unless we find out that ePub at B&N and on the Nook will be infected with Adept and not social password type DRM.
You are going to have to eventually boycott all the other EPub readers too. This new social password is getting added to all of Adobe's systems.

Thanks Jim... it's good to hear some real information for someone at Adobe that's in the know!

However, I do expect that Fictionwise will be rolled into B&N proper eventually... they will only transfer your eReader purchases.

Of course, this is my supposition... but I can't see them maintaining FW separately much past next year.

Sorry. I clearly thought otherwise and could swear I checked out that page it said differently.

If you click the "multiformat" link on the left-hand side of the home page it says:

Fictionwise MultiFormat titles are unencrypted eBooks that can be read with the FREE eReader application that you can download by clicking here. The eReader software is compatible with the following devices: Palm OS, Windows Mobile Pocket PC (Professional), Windows Mobile Smartphone (Standard), Symbian Series 60 or Symbian UIQ. You can also read eBooks on a Windows PC/Notebook, Apple Macintosh or an OQO Ultra Portable Computer.

Nothing about epub, mobi, etc.

Also if you look on the page you provided the like to just below the list it says 12 formats, not 13 and does not list epub.

also the older version of the site does not list epub (via the wayback machine)

So far, that DRM is EReader style DRM which is keyed to a password or credit-card number and not tied to a server that will eventually go dark. Have you ADOBE library books that won't open because of some bug or have you not been able to authorize your computer because of a bug that forces you to run through your entire authorization count? This doesn't happen with EReader. Oh, and I don't need screwey proprietary software to download my EReader books. I just need a web browser.
Agreed. I can't stand DRM, but at least I don't have to worry about additional software or device limitations to read my content. If my credit card changes I can reset the password on my books and re-download. It's not ideal, but at least it's a little more user centered than the other methods.

More tempted than I though I woud be

Watching the video made things look more appealing than the initial linked photos did.

I want to see how well it handle PDF's and how useable the note taking function is, though. And battery life and all that jazz.

Hello all. Pre-orderd a nook today, my first e-reader and decided to register as well. Came real close to getting the Sony Touch until I heard about the B&N e-reader.

One point that may not have been mentioned in this thread is that in the B&N B-roll footage the nook store display on the right hand side says "On-Sale November 24th."

B-roll

Personally I look at DRM as an extra feature I won't use. If it can read DRM free files than that's all I care about. However, competition is good and even though I don't like DRM I like having a single DRM scheme owned and controlled by a single vendor even less. Some people will say DRM is DRM and should be avoided but if the B&N version is easier to use than that's an improvement. Even if all it does is cause the Adobe system to become less restrictive than there was a benefit to having a competing scheme.

I am not impressed with that DRM scheme. Our purchased books, since they are "keyed" with our credit card are a security risk equivalent to our credit card number, and should be protected the same? I should fear the situation where this particular DRM protection is broken?

I'll pass.

It looks like it'll be a cool device. I hope all books don't look like the page of Pride & Prejudice on the B&N site though. No indents?

Might be OK for some, but I've tried reading like that when I screwed up formatting a book, won't work for me. I suppose you could put a space between each paragraph, but I dislike that too.

Isn't it keyed to only the last eight numbers?

Not exactly. The number and your name are used to encrypt the book, but it does not contain that information.
