That nativity drop in affluent cultures has already been described by psychologists as a natural effect caused by a combination of the decreased need to produce your own workforce (typically needed in agricultural settings), and the decreased need to produce offspring that will have to take care of their parents in later years. As more affluent people realize that they can hire workers and finance their own retirement, they can afford to have fewer children, and therefore simply choose not to have large families.
(Zits on a Ritz... are we still talking about kids?!?) |

Recently mentioned in another thread that may or may not have spun off of this one: Electric cars are so quiet they risk hitting pedestrians (who don't have the common sense to look both ways before crossing a street). This is actually also a problem with gas-powered cars, many of which make very little noise until they're right on top of you (literally!), as well as bicyclists.
Something that's waay overdue, then, is a personal collision detector that will signal you if you are on an interception course with anything bigger than and/or moving faster than you. Maybe it can be programmed with a familiar voice... I know if I heard my father's voice say "Look out, son!" I'd get outta that street fast! |

Waay overdue: New good protest songs! (How do you know they're good? When they're still relevant!)
60s and early 70s protest songs kicked a$$! Especially the Motown protests (Mercy Mercy Me, Ball of Confusion, Money, Make Me Wanna Holler, etc). Most recent protest songs I've heard are LAME. (I liked MJ&JJ's Scream, but the Temptations would have done it better.) Woo! |

Dear Mr President by Pink was probably the best protest song of this generation...

Ok, I was replying this thread and my finger slipped and I lost ALL that I wrote! Since I was translating a fairly long song, I lost about 45 minutes of work!!!
Automatic saving of what we write is what we need! (or better control of our limbs?) Starting again: Libérez-nous des libéraux (Free us from the liberals), by Loco Locass, is a great protest song here in Québec, that has been running since 2004 and is not about to go away, since the liberals were recently re-elected. I decided not to retranslate all, but you'll get the idea. Ready or not, the Charest (Qc's Prime Minister) whore, restless, butchers to pieces the frame Of the house we took 40 years to build. Aren't you the one who militate for Amir Khadir? (leader of a left wing party) Now the table is set for four years to suffer, to grow quickly pale, Stupefied by the sight of the gang of idiots that sell off fast That sell off cheaply, on the side, what has no price Once the mandate is over, the country looks like gibblets. « C’est ca etre solidaire quand on a sacré tout à terre » Drastic cuts, severe cuts, Grey cup "Alouette, je te plumerai" And to cut short the crowd's wrath Patapouf (nickname given to Charest) strangles the crowd and legislate as fast as he can, then smiling, he feeds soup to the homeless "That's solidarity when you threw everything down" Afin de faire taire, un argumentaire unique en terre d’Amérique. » And to shut you up, argument unique in America. But his business, fits far too well the business leaders Of Canada and the Employers Consultency Gag or no gag, I mock anyway, the boss of Bosses "Shut up Taillon" (ex-leader of the Employers Consultency) Hey si le dément démantèlement t’excites tellement que c’est comme de la musique à tes oreilles, comment t’aimes le tintamarre des barbares, dans tes tympans d’avare hagard? Libérez-nous des Libéraux Hey, if the crazy demolition excites you so much that it's like music to your ears, how do you like the barbarian's racket in your ears? Facing the threat of the wholesale sell-off we brandish the Nation's fist to the face of the bandits. Free us from the liberals. Because of the French text, I have not used spellcheck - sorry for the possible mistakes! The point I'm making: protest songs are still being written, but on small scales for particular causes. |

Loco Locass is the most lucid, intelligent bunch I've ever heard. I do not like rap, but those guys are poets.
Hey, Cat! I thought you weren't a separatist? Those guys sure are! ![]() |

No need to be a separatist to understand the need to pull to the left! I might believe in Canada, but I don't believe in Harper!!!!
And it's Saint-Jean-Baptiste tomorrow, I always feel more politicized when it comes around ![]() |
