UPDATE: Looking around some more, I found a webpage at the state of Texas' official travel/tourism department where you can download a free PDF of the 2013-2015 Texas Tour Guide, International Edition. No questions asked, easy peasy. Here's the link.
Here's a link, that looks to be about as direct as you would be able to get, to the Guide. You can request to "view online" as well as to get one via snail mail. I don't know exactly what "view online" means--if you get a downloadable book or just some html pages. Maybe you would get a PDF. I like to test these things before mentioning them on this website, but frankly the form that you have to fill out is ridiculously (IMHO) long, so I didn't this time. Curious, I checked to see if Texas has a state library. Turns out that they do, it's here. I was unable to find a Texas Travel Guide there, downloadable or not. It appears that they don't have any documents produced by the state's official tourism department. Looks like they would. Every state is going to be different . . . . FREE PDF Book on How Norway's TEACHERS Defeated Quisling During the Nazi Occupation.
This free book comes courtesy of the Albert Einstein Institution, an organization with the mission of "advancing freedom through nonviolent action." Regardless of whether or not you agree with the pacifist views of the organization or of this book, I think that you will find this book to be an interesting read on a forgotten chapter in the Nazi occupation of Norway.
This book is hard to find. There is only a used paperback copy available at Amazon, and it is $53.99. Title: Tyranny Could Not Quell Them!: How Norway's Teachers Defeated Quisling During the Nazi Occupation and What It Means for Unarmed Defence Today. Format(s): PDF. Author(s): Gene Sharp. Publisher: Originally, the Publications Committee of Peace News, The International Pacifist Weekly; this reprint is almost certainly by the Albert Einstein Institution. Pages: 23. Ebook Rating/Number of Reviews (Amazon): None at Amazon; the book apparently is not listed at GoodReads. Price: $0.00. Lowest Price at (or through Amazon) if available from there: $53.99, shipped (Used paperback "Good"). Book Description (from the Introduction): THE Norwegian teachers' resistance is one of the most widely known incidents of the Nazi occupation of Norway. There is much tender feeling concerning it, not because it shows outstanding heroism or particularly dramatic event§, but because it shows what happens where a section of ordinary citizens, very few of whom aspire to be heroes or pioneers of resistance, are suddenly faced with terrifying situations of a kind which they were never trained to meet. Those who showed weaknesses will probably never get over it. Those who found unexpected strength in their hearts will perhaps always feel stronger. The journey to the camp at Kirkenes and the decisions taken before it exemplifies a kind of test that might be put to anyone anywhere in the years to come. The main lesson seems-to be that people are able to stand up for what they believe and find their own leaders irrespective of how the military situation develops. Comments: Has 28 illustrations, including original prison camp drawings. I believe this to be a legal free download due to the fact that it is offered as a free resource at the Albert Einstein Institution on this webpage. #1 Seller in 3 Kindle Categories, Very Highly Rated, & 88% Off--Book about Elon Musk.
The 88% markdown is from the digital list price.
Elon Musk is truly a genius, IMHO. It's great to have this outstanding book about him marked down so low. I noticed that this is a Nook special of the day. I'm wondering if Amazon price-matched their price, and so the $1.99 price will be good for today only. I hope that everyone who wants it will be able to get it while it's marked down so low. Elon Musk: Tesla, SpaceX, and the Quest for a Fantastic Future. By Ashlee Vance. Rated 4.6 stars, from 1,179 reviews at Amazon, at the present moment. Print list price $28.99; digital list price $15.99; Kindle price now $1.99. Ecco, publisher. 421 pages. http://www.amazon.com/Elon-Musk-Spac...dp/B00KVI76ZS/. Book Description In Elon Musk: Tesla, SpaceX, and the Quest for a Fantastic Future, veteran technology journalist Ashlee Vance provides the first inside look into the extraordinary life and times of Silicon Valley's most audacious entrepreneur. Written with exclusive access to Musk, his family and friends, the book traces the entrepreneur's journey from a rough upbringing in South Africa to the pinnacle of the global business world. Vance spent over 40 hours in conversation with Musk and interviewed close to 300 people to tell the tumultuous stories of Musk's world-changing companies: PayPal, Tesla Motors, SpaceX and SolarCity, and to characterize a man who has renewed American industry and sparked new levels of innovation while making plenty of enemies along the way. Vance uses Musk's story to explore one of the pressing questions of our time: can the nation of inventors and creators which led the modern world for a century still compete in an age of fierce global competition? He argues that Musk--one of the most unusual and striking figures in American business history--is a contemporary amalgam of legendary inventors and industrialists like Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, Howard Hughes, and Steve Jobs. More than any other entrepreneur today, Musk has dedicated his energies and his own vast fortune to inventing a future that is as rich and far-reaching as the visionaries of the golden age of science-fiction fantasy. |

FREE Kansas Travel Guide, from the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks, and Tourism.
You can buy travel guides to the states of the Union, or you can get one free from most, if not all, of the official departments of travel/tourism of each state. You just have to put up with some advertisements, sometimes, inside the official ones; that's really about all of the difference that there is.
I'm not trying to promote Kansas as a travel destination. And I don't plan on starting a pattern of this. I just ran across this free official travel guide for the state while doing some research on Kansas' state library to see if there were any ebook freebies to be had from them (there weren't--not even this travel guide). And, I thought, "Aw, why not post it?" Title: Kansas Official Travel Guide 2016. Format(s): PDF. Author(s): Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks, and Tourism? Publisher: Madden Media, LLC. Pages: Approximately 140. Ebook Rating/Number of Reviews (Amazon): N/A. Price: $0.00. Lowest Price at (or through Amazon) if available from there: N/A. Book Description: The official state of Kansas Travel Guide for 2016, produced by the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks, and Tourism. Comments: I believe this to be a legal free download because there is a link on a webpage of the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks, and Tourism (http://www.travelks.com/travel-tools/travel-guide/) to an online view of the guide (http://www.myvirtualpaper.com/doc/Ma...i/2015103001#0), where there is a download link (see below) provided, without caveats, for the PDF of it. URL: http://cdn-s3.myvirtualpaper.com/m/m...ned_300dpi.pdf (direct link). Last edited by GtrsRGr8; 05-01-2016 at 10:44 PM. |

University of Chicago Press' FREE Ebook of the Month--Ebert's Best.
Well, it looks like no one has posted yet this month's free University of Chicago Press title. So I will take care of it this month.
It's Ebert's Best, a "memoir essay" by Roger Ebert. It's one of the Chicago Shorts series, so the ebook is short this time--32 pages. Here's the blurb/book description, from the book's UCP website: Roger Ebert is a name synonymous with the movies. In Ebert’s Bests, he takes readers through the journey of how he became a film critic, from his days at a student-run cinema club to his rise as a television commentator in At the Movies and Siskel & Ebert. Recounting the influence of the French New Wave, his friendships with Werner Herzog and Martin Scorsese, as well as travels to Sweden and Rome to visit Ingrid Bergman and Federico Fellini, Ebert never loses sight of film as a key component of our cultural identity. In considering the ethics of film criticism—why we should take all film seriously, without prejudgment or condescension—he argues that film critics ought always to engage in open-minded dialogue with a movie. Extending this to his accompanying selection of “10 Bests,” he reminds us that hearts and minds—and even rankings—are bound to change. You probably know the routine to get the free ebook. Go to the download webpage. Submit your email address. UCP will email you a direct link to it. Last edited by GtrsRGr8; 05-02-2016 at 06:21 PM. |

I have been checking UCP's Twitter page daily for the last two or three months. When I checked today, the free ebook of the month was on it, and I immediately posted it. I had not checked my email for the day until after I had seen the announcement on the Twitter page, but when I did I noticed the same thing that you did--that UCP hadn't sent the email yet. |

X-link to the DRM-free thread for a new StoryBundle:
The Nerd History Bundle contains mostly non-fiction titles which are histories, biographies, and memoirs of old-school computing machines and personalities, including a backlist biography of Bill Gates which the New York Times called "definitive" (circa 1993), a book on the TRS-80 computer (which I only know about via a mention in Rick Cook's excellent Wiz Biz series where computer programmers are kidnapped to save a fantasy world), a management consultant's analysis of Google, and a fiction anthology sponsored by the National Maritime Museum in the UK, with stories about Isaac Newton & Ada Lovelace. |
