$3.95 -- Ordinary Light -- Tracy K Smith -- read by Tracy K Smith (11.2 hrs) --> personal memoir

Quote:
Tracy K. Smith has a fairly typical upbringing in suburban California: the youngest in a family of five children raised with limitless affection and a firm belief in God by a stay-at-home mother and an engineer father. But after spending a summer in Alabama at her grandmother's home, she returns to California with a new sense of what it means for her to be black: from her mother's memories of picking cotton as a girl in her father's field for pennies a bushel to her parents' involvement in the Civil Rights Movement.

These dizzying juxtapositions - between her family's past, her own comfortable present, and the promise of her future - will eventually compel her to act on her passions for love and "ecstatic possibility" and her desire to become a writer. But when her mother is diagnosed with cancer, which she says is part of God's plan, Tracy must learn a new way to love and look after someone whose beliefs she has outgrown.

Written with a poet's precision and economy, this gorgeous, probing kaleidoscope of self and family offers us a universal story of belonging and becoming and the ways we find and lose ourselves amid the places we call home.

$5.99 -- Whiskey Tango Foxtrot -- David Shafer -- read by BS Clark (15.2 hrs) --> contemp fiction

Quote:
Three young adults grapple with the usual thirty-something problems--boredom, authenticity, an omnipotent online oligarchy--in David Shafer's darkly comic debut novel.

The Committee, an international cabal of industrialists and media barons, is on the verge of privatizing all information. Dear Diary, an idealistic online Underground, stands in the way of that takeover, using radical politics, classic spycraft, and technology that makes Big Data look like dial-up. Into this secret battle stumbles an unlikely trio: Leila Majnoun, a disillusioned non-profit worker; Leo Crane, an unhinged trustafarian; and Mark Deveraux, a phony self-betterment guru who works for the Committee.

Leo and Mark were best friends in college, but early adulthood has set them on diverging paths. Growing increasingly disdainful of Mark's platitudes, Leo publishes a withering takedown of his ideas online. But the Committee is reading--and erasing--Leo's words. On the other side of the world, Leila's discoveries about the Committee's far-reaching ambitions threaten to ruin those who are closest to her.

In the spirit of William Gibson and Chuck Palahniuk,Whiskey Tango Foxtrot is both a suspenseful global thriller and an emotionally truthful novel about the struggle to change the world in- and outside your head.

I don't do much with Audible, or audio books in general, but have 2 credits from an old membership and was looking to use them in the 2-4-1 sale. I just noticed, after looking desperately through the mystery and non-fiction sections (my two general reading areas) that there are several obvious mysteries also in the "fiction" section.

Those of you with more experience may have known that Audible genre classifications aren't all that good, but this helped me find a fourth book so now my credits are gone. And if anyone else is as naive as I was , now you know to look in all the genres if you're desperate, since the sort into categories is not that good.

$1.95 -- Nightwise -- RS Belcher -- read by Bronson Pinchot (10.5 hrs) --> fantasy, paranormal

Quote:
R.S. Belcher, the acclaimed author of The Six-Gun Tarot and The Shotgun Arcana, launches a gritty new urban fantasy series set in today's seedy occult underworld in Nightwise.

In the more shadowy corners of the world, frequented by angels and demons and everything in between, Laytham Ballard is a legend. It's said he raised the dead at the age of 10, stole the Philosopher's Stone in Vegas back in 1999, and survived the bloodsucking kiss of the Mosquito Queen. Wise in the hidden ways of the night, he's also a cynical bastard who stopped thinking of himself as the good guy a long time ago.

Now a promise to a dying friend has Ballard on the trail of an escaped Serbian war criminal with friends in both high and low places - and a sinister history of blood sacrifices. Ballard is hell-bent on making Dusan Slorzack pay for his numerous atrocities, but Slorzack seems to have literally dropped off the face of the Earth, beyond the reach of his enemies, the Illuminati, and maybe even the devil himself. To find Slorzack, Ballard must follow a winding, treacherous path that stretches from Wall Street and Washington, DC, to backwoods hollows and truck stops while risking what's left of his very soul....

Quote:
Author John Shors has won numerous awards, and his works have been translated into 25 languages. In The Wishing Trees, Ian and his 10-year-old daughter Mattie are struggling with the passing of Kate—wife and mother—after her long battle with cancer. When Ian finally opens a letter Kate handed him before her death, he is surprised at the request inside: that he and Mattie travel across Asia while opening a series of letters from Kate, one at a time. As they complete each stage of the trip, they tie paper wishes to trees, which helps them come to terms with their loss.

I only just became a fan of audiobooks this year due to a change in my family situation that drastically increased my commuting time. For the most part I've stuck with the OverDrive books available through my public library but I have been toying with getting an Audible subscription. However, thanks to this thread I discovered Downpour and am trying that out as a cheaper alternative. I really appreciate all of you sharing the latest deals and especially Monkey for keeping the first page up to date. Thanks!

This daily deal made me want to experiment, and I am happy to report a total success. As many of you may know, I spend time looking for deals. One way I get goodies is taking surveys. I've used several services to get Amazon GCs, but as you know these don't work at Audible. I can now report there is a way to get stuff from Audible. eRewards has an option to use your rewards dollars to get a $10 credit to Audible. Since I was interested in today's Daily Deal I thought I'd give it a try, and it works! Just thought you deal-seekers would like to know.

Yes, please continue recommendations!
I have a questions about Kindle Unlimited and companion Audible books. I often "buy" the KU book just to get the Audible companion at at low cost, or free.

What happens when I "return" the KU book. Does the Audible that I have paid for go away? Or only the free "companion whispersync"?

Sometimes it is a "companion whispersync" at no cost. This is a pain since I usually download the audible file to my PC and then sideload it to the SGP5 that I use as a mp3 player. The audible "companion whispersync" file cannot be directly downloaded to PC and doesn't come up in the Audible Library when I connect with the sgp5. I can download it to an Android tablet - so I will copy the .aax fileon the tablet to the PC and then the SGP5 and see if I can listen to it. Otherwise it is less than useless! I'd rather pay a couple of $s.

I will experiment as soon as I finish listening to my current book, but thought someone here might know.

Also, if I cancel my Audible membership, can I still purchase the companion or whispersync audiobook when I purchase the ebook?
Thank you!

You keep the Audible book. I've checked out public library books in order to buy the matching Audible books at reduced prices. I still have the Audible books even though the library books have been returned.
