I do not want a civil servant teaching religious values to my children. That is my job.

I DO want my children taught evolutionary theory. It is the theory that best explains the development of species that exists today. And as a Christian I see no conflict between the biblical account and the scientific theory. The Hebrew word translated as 'day' in English does not mean a 24 hour period - I see no religious reason to believe the Earth is only 7000 years old. And whether Adam was literally created from dust or he was simply the first of God's creations to be given the soul of a man after God had guided the evolutionary process is irrelevant to me. I believe that God created man, the method does not change the miracle.

Now would you like me, a fellow Christian, to be teaching religious values to your children? The differences between religious perceptions and doctrines even within Christianity is just more reason for government to stay out of teaching values and religion.

Oh yes, if you are a christian, then I wouldn't mind placing my kids in your care....its some measure of comfort. But I think you've got it all backwards... why not have your government teach the basic religious values, and you teach your kids evolution. Anyway the religious values are timeless and been around for centuries. Evolution isn't even worked out yet and they keep changing their mind about the details. Its a question of priorities, and surely teaching about Jesus and his sacrifice is much more important than some speculative scientific theory. Not everyone needs to learn advanced philosophy, not everyone needs to learn about Islam, not everybody needs to learn mathematics or the branches of science..... Everyone needs to learn about Jesus. Surely thats right...........

Surely everyone needs to learn that there is more than one religion, and each one has its place in learning. One religion is not better than another and are linked more than appears to be accepted.

I thought I'd just put this out for all you folks to think about...

Obama finds hidden reference to God in the Constitution
WASHINGTON DC — During President Obama’s conference call with dozens of faith leaders that provoked a 40-day campaign of religious activism in the form of prayer vigils, advertising, and more, the President revealed that he had uncovered undeniable proof that the nation’s founders intended to invoke the Christian god (“God”) in the U.S. Constitution.1

“It was a clerical manipulation intended to be found at the right moment,” said Obama of the Constitutional reference to God. “Just like ancient manuscripts were copied and recopied throughout the ages, creating and perpetuating early translation and other mistakes while hiding key messages from early religious leaders. The Declaration of Independence, for instance, was drafted and redrafted, and we actually put on display differing copies of what we think is the same document, and it is full of Masonic and other mysterious code.”2

Obama told the religious leaders that “I am my brother’s keeper,” referring to the biblical passage from Genesis where God asks Cain where his brother Abel was,3 and Cain replies, “I know not. Am I my brother’s keeper?”4

Obama insisted that passing health care reform was a biblical mandate, a moral and ethical obligation established by God. Some critics have chided Obama’s decision to invoke the Christian god, but Obama was adamant that the Constitution clearly established the government as a Christian nation. When asked to clarify, Obama pulled his personal, redlined copy of the Constitution from his desk drawer and showed it to reporters attending the conference.

Upon viewing Obama’s copy, the religious experts on hand agreed that Obama had successfully spotted the name of God (Yahweh) spelled out clearly in the Constitution.

Compare for yourself:

(Obama’s redlined copy)

(an unedited copy)5

(the Hebrew for Yahweh)

“Despite the fact that the language of the pre-God Constitution not only justifies, but also requires the U.S. government to reform health care for the welfare of America’s citizens,” Obama continued, “the biblical god, by way of the Constitution, demands it, so we must follow accordingly. Without our faith, this couldn’t be accomplished.”

A small minority of opponents still argue that prayer and religion have no place in government meetings, but Obama’s administration is well on its way to homogenizing the American religious point of view.

Up to this point, no one had been able to successfully find a pro-religious reference in the Constitution, and religious leaders worldwide have expressed their relief that the United States is finally falling into place among its fellow theocracies.

Terrazoids, I will defend your right to believe what you want provided you state it in that context and will ask that you not drag this thread into the muck as you did the last one.

Thank you.

That is pretty scary isn't it. I was reading something recently that had the number a bit higher, around 9,000 total, but that is still incredibly slim!!

Teaching moral and spiritual values? Parents' job.

Teaching diverse beliefs and alternate world views? School's job.

Knowledge is power.

Unfortunately, it is all too common these days to have people pointing the finger at schools for not doing the job of the parents. Pretty soon we'll be taking care of them from sunrise to sundown, teaching them morals and. character, bathing them, feeding all three meals, teach them right from wrong... Oh wait, we already do. And schools are also expected to teach students everything they possibly need to pass state tests and prepare them for rigorous higher education and life in general. Kind of hard when they are also expected to play parent and perform all the roles attached to that.

No thanks. I want my kids parented at home and taught at school. Don't rewrite/edit history to fit a confined set of beliefs.

I am stating it in context am I not? I'm on the point of this thread. Maybe I'm saying things you don't like to hear but I certainly respect you and your right to say them.

You know isn't that what your evolution's all about.... species fighting for survival and the best form wins out. Well so it is with ideas... people have got to stand up for what they believe or discard their beliefs for better ones. God's a pretty strong idea... thats cause its true.
