I agree that PC keyboards seem to be getting worse and worse over time. And what's with this trend toward "chicklet" keyboards that seems to be taking hold in the laptop realm? Anyway, I mostly use older keyboards that have good tactile feel. I still have an old Gateway 2000 programmable keyboard laying around from an old P5-60 (back when a PC was still not an appliance). I've never tried a modern "high end" keyboard like the ones mentioned above. I bet it's a nice luxury. I work with a few people who swear by the Microsoft ergonomic keyboards, but I always have a hard time getting used to the layout. I thank the higher powers that I haven't had carpal tunnel or other similar problems...

I used to have a MS-ergo keyboard, back in the mid 90's... but one thing that I found persistently troublesome was that they didn't cope with shear/side-force as well as I'd like, so the key stroke would be stalled by excessive friction due to the slider/barrel key guide.
Since returning to the IBM-M types I'm much happier... I can also now crush small bugs with my powerful fingers ![]() |

Having been brought up on battered old sit-up-and-beg typewriters -- mostly hammered to death in busy newsrooms I've worked in around the world -- I tend to be very heavy-handed on keyboards.
Can't get out of the habit of hitting the keys mightily to make an impression on half a dozen carbon copies, so I go through them at an alarming rate. I just pick up cheapos for a few bucks. Problem is that, living in France (AZERTY), I've got to have them shipped from the UK or US (QWERTY), so I always keep a couple of spares. Cheers. Neil |
