When I'm reading fiction I keep this feature off. Who cares what Alex Cross quote someone else found interesting? But when I am reading non-fiction, say a book on leadership, I find it very helpful to see what others found to be significant. This is actually one of my favorite features.

Now what would be really cool is if one could set up a network of certain users and only share highlights with them. My staff and I could all read the same book and share our highlights with each other! Come to think of it, with the ability to share highlights on Facebook there may already be a way for us to share highlights. Hmmm...

The title of this thread makes it sound like a "catch and release" program.

I don't use the shared annotations feature (2.33 firmware, whee!) but if I did, "Popular Highlights" would become "Popular Typos", because that's pretty much all I ever make a note of in my officially Amazon-obtained books.

I was thinking more along the lines of "free range" annotations.

Reread my post. I'm not accusing you of spamming. I'm saying that the only person that can see the contents of your annotations is yourself. You mentioned people posting promotional or annoying remarks on YouTube. If somebody tried that on their Kindle then they'd be spamming themselves as nobody else can see those annotations so it'd be pointless.
