7 day cancellation policy

I believe you can cancel an eBook purchase for 7 days.

I am not sure about this. Maybe someone else can confirm it.

Very easy. My first and only pay-purchase at Amazon was by accident while I was trying to get a sample using my computer. Via the website at least, they go straight to "bought", no confirm-you-want-this screen, so I didn't notice until I started reading and realized the sample seemed unusually long.

I decided not to return that book because it was
  • something I was more-or-less interested in at the time,
  • wasn't available via the local libraries,
  • didn't cost that much and was then cheaper than at the other stores,
  • I'd already read 2 of the author's other works as free promos and a third via the library,
and most importantly, I'd lose out on after the CC exchange back to Canadian dollars.

But I've now padded my account with gift certificates so that if it happens again, at least I can refund it without any extra cost due to the currency conversion.

I wish they (and all the other majors) had the option of a shopping cart function that would group all your prospective purchases and calculate taxes and such.

That's about the only redeeming feature of the Sony store, which they make you use their hideous Reader Library software to get their books via.

The very first time I handed my Kindle to my sister, she looked up a book, said, "Hey, here it is. Oh, shoot -- I bought it!" Luckily down at the bottom of that screen after you've made a purchase it has a little "Click here if you bought this book by accident." It works.

Thanks - I didn't know that. How interesting. Now I'll tell my daughter, and she'll roll her eyes and say everyone knew except me...

Unfortunately the "Make a mistake? Cancel here!" option is only available when you purchase within the Kindle store on the Kindle itself, and not for purchases made via the Amazon web site, nor (maddeningly) is it available when you buy from a book sample on the Kindle.

To date I've bought 2 books accidentally due to the swapping out of menu items in the sample books. The screen refresh is laggy enough that you get used to quickly going Menu->Click! to get to the table of contents...unless it's a sample book, in which case you just made a purchase. (The TOC is one menu-item lower down in sample books, so you get to watch it fade away as you go "Nonononono!" and your wireless kicks in..) An email to customer support de-purchases it, but still. Would it be so hard to set our minds at ease with a simple "Please confirm your purchase" dialog?

I've bough a book from a Kindle sample and the Cancel option is present. What I miss though is that the "buy this book" does not show the book price. So you have to remember how expensive the book was.

Yes it would be hard. You can't make money on mistakes if you do that.

Not easy at all. You click on a button to buy which is clearly marked to buy. Another button is for a sample and it's clearly marked for sample. You don't buy from a list of books so you really can't click one book when you're thinking of another. You first go to a page just for that book where you can read reviews, etc., and you buy from there.

The problem, for me, is buying more than I need. That isn't an accident. I click and click and click and then say, "I bought how many?"

It's dangerously easy to download books. I was looking at a book, but decided the $9.99 charge was too much, when lo and behold, I got a message from Amazon thanking me for ordering. I quickly cancelled the order. I have the one-click ordering so maybe that's why it's so easy.
