Kindle for PC don't run that well with linux. it lacks the polices to display the text.

It cannot be per se illegal to download from torrents or any other file transfer infrastructure. In the end the question is - what are you downloading. That is where things get interesting.

As someone pointed out earlier: you can download operating system such as Linux from torrents; some Linux distributions rely entirely on that because they do not have the means to afford expensive servers to provide the means of downloading a new version, and users are encouraged to share it via a P2P platform (which essentially distributes download/upload among a multitude of users; say, you start to download a file, then you will have certain chunks of the file available on your system, such that you can also share those chunks with other users who want to get the file).

It is not what you download, it is what you share. Even in the USA they can do nothing to you for the act of downloading. However, if you shared even 1 bit of illegal material they can prosecute you. Problem with torrents is that when you download you also share it, that is where they catch you.

That's not true. Downloading copyrighted material without the permission of the copyright holder is certainly illegal in the US.
