I'm not sure if restoring to factory default will remove the updates but it does remove your books on the kindle so beware - but in your case it might be worth a shot. Menu - settings - menu ? I think off the top of my head.

Thanks. I removed all my books - maybe only 30 or so - backed everything up and tried the resetting it to default on Wednesday, but it helped nothing. I tried all possible troubleshooting steps before calling CS on Friday but I did changed anything. Interestingly enough, CS was not surprised by my complaint, nor did they try any troubleshooting, and immediately sent me another K3. I was hopeful for the new one but they are about equal in symptoms.

The majority of people find, with eInk devices, that after a few hours of use their brain just filters out the flash and they are no longer consciously aware of it, but there are a small number of people who just can't live with it. If you are one such person, unfortunately the only solution is to get a reader which uses a different display technology, such as LCD. |

Lets put it like this. Yes, surely there was something, but the difference before and after was so striking as to SHOCK me and make me angry. Angry, not surprised, annoyed, or displeased. It was to a point that I could no longer read comfortably. It was a HUGE change, not minor.
I keep pointing out something that no one has latched onto. I have a K1 and a K2. The page turns are now as slow as the two older devices. Additionally, where on the two legacy devices there is no "black screen" when placing a bookmark, and there wasn't on the K3 prior to the 3.0.1 update, there is a full black page flash now when bookmarking. My point here is not to discuss whether or not my issue is valid but to get help removing the updates if possible as a final troubleshooting step before returning the K3. The change is not my imagination and it is a huge disappointment considering where I came from when I first got it. Let's please keep this thread focused on what I have asked for help with, rather than the debate as to whether my device pre-update had fast page turns. |

I'm afraid there's there is no way to remove an update; all that can be done is to apply another update. Given that o/s 3.0 was the "base" operating system level, there's no update to go to that version, hence no way to return to it.

I have, repeatedly. I have a K1 and there is no flash. I have a K2 and there is no flash. Prior to the 3.0.1 update my K3 had no flash when bookmarking and I had fast page turns - substantially faster than either of the other devices. Now I do not.

What do other people find on the K1 and K2. Is there or isn't there a black flash when setting or clearing a bookmark? My K2 does flash; that's with firmware 2.5.3.

well, you can always youtube it to prove your point, since you are claiming something entirely different than the rest of the people using kindle.

Wow, you folks are unreal. I don't have to do anything. You all have a lovely Sunday. I hope you find something better to do than badger someone asking for help.

I'm honestly not sure what you want people to do. You asked "can a firmware update be undone?". The answer to that is "no". If that was what you came here to ask, your question has been answered.
What people are wondering is why it is that you seem to have a Kindle that behaves differently to everyone else's. That's an entirely reasonable question to ask. |

Everything else, including magnitude of black flashes and speed of page turns, is rather individual experience for everybody. |

I would think it would have to reflash when adding a bookmark as the eink has to redraw the dogeared page.........

Reading upgrade procedure, I'm positive there is no way to go back,
aside asking for first firmware version. Searching does not show any link to it. My best bet is that 3.0.2 has to be on the device, whatever particular user thinks on performance. There is also a chance that device has to be replaced for some hardware glitch. New owners tend to overact when they upgrade or buy new device. I do and I simply wait a bit to see the whole picture better. It almost always solves my problem. |

You can't downgrade without significant hacking and manual work. The upgrades you get from Amazon are actually composed of many patches and you can't back them out. The only way to downgrade would be to copy them off an earlier firmware from another Kindle, get root on your Kindle and then manually copy all the files. This obviously isn't recommended and has a high chance of breaking something if you're not careful.
