capidamonte,
When I first received the validation error, I tried all sorts of permutations with and without the .png extension and id tags, etc., and couldn't get any of them to work with Adobe DE until I simply left off the 'frontispiece.png' as indicated in my 9-17, 11:26 post. At that point I decided the simple solution was good enough; it worked perfectly and no validation errors resulted.

The only drawback with that approach is that the image must be in its own section; if there were two images/and or text in the same section it would not work correctly. But I don't see any problem with having each image in its own separate section.

I appreciate all the suggestions, and probably someday will come back to the problem and try other solutions with id tags.

Hitch - I'll repeat again that I wanted an internal hotlink toc NOT an external toc and my problem was with the internal toc. Please refer to my original post. I'll also remember your approach for the captionless external Sigil TOC; I didn't realize that would work. It probably would be best to have the images referred to both in the internal and external tocs because some readers prefer one or the other.

If you have any suggestions for a better solution than the one I gave for my problem with internal hotlink image toc and Adobe DE, I'd really appreciate that.
Bob
Actually, Bob, you said, a couple of posts back, as a clarification, that:

Quote:
The problem with the external TOC for an image is that it requires a caption associated with it (although one can eliminate it with a white text color, it still takes up space that reduces the maximum viewable image size) so I generally don't show images in the external TOC.
...which seemed to imply--hell, outright state--that you weren't using the external TOC because it required a caption associated therewith. I was merely advising that it doesn't. As I apparently misunderstood your statement, fine--don't use it.

Thanks again for taking the time and effor to correct my error about images with external toc. I'll remember it when I work on my next external toc for an epub with images that I'd like to include in the toc.

Thanks to capidamonte, ATDrake, and Hitch, I finally found a variation that works with the internal TOC and also provides an appropriate external TOC without any caption space and with no validation errors.

Here's the internal toc:
<p class="noindent"><a href="../Text/Section0003.xhtml">Frontispiece.</a></p>
(This hasn't changed from my original post).

And here's the new code from Section0003.xhtml, that works with the internal hotref TOC and provides the no-caption external toc:

<div class="center">
<h3 title="Frontispiece." id="frontispiece.png"><img alt="frontispiece" class="size-1" src="../Images/frontispiece.png" /></h3>
</div>

Thanks for all the help!
Bob

You can also just set Display to none in the CSS for the text you want. I use that to remove the paper page numbers.

But that also disappears the text if you're using it for things like text-to-speech.

display:hidden might be a good choice, too, but it reserves space in the flow.

That would be "visibility: hidden", and it's unfortunately not included in the ePUB spec (because it would be useful elsewhere).

Yeah, you're right. I mixed 'em together.

Lots of things would be useful. I've been struggling all day with getting a background image into a page in iBooks.

That's an iBooks issue, too, but really? That should be in the spec.
