So in my case I have a Dutch Visa card with a Dutch billing address and I use that card to buy books at B&N using a US billing address in my account.
This way people like me without a US credit card are still able to buy e-books.

In the case of B&N even people from the US that do have an US credit card have to use a VPN if they want to buy books when they are outside the US because of the IP-address check.
OK, thanks, now I understand. The reason I found it difficult to follow the logic was that it never occurred to me that they wouldn't verify the address. So I could try what you're doing, but I'm a bit scared to ... tell me, does your card use the "verified by visa" thing?

What if you had a friend in the US (or wherever the ebook is available) set up an account in their own name, using their own CC and whatnot, purchase the book for you. They would download it onto their computer, then email it to you. Would that work, even if it was DRMed? And if it did work, would it be considered legal? This is assuming that they would then delete the download, and not authorize the book on their own reader.

Verified by Visa does not depend on your Visa card. Stores choose if they want to use verified by Visa. I do no know any bookstores that use it.

Just try buying books this way. The only thing that can happen is that the store does not accept your payment and your order will be cancelled. Nothing to be scared about.

For someone like me who buys a lot of e-books such a solution would not really work. But the real problem would be DRM.

This would work with the B&N DRM because those books are not tied to a software or hardware ID. You would have to type in your friend's credit card number and name to open the first book. The following books would just open.

Kindle books are tied to the hardware ID of the reader. You would have to register your Kindle to your friend's Kindle account. And he would have to manage your books in his account.

Adobe Epub books are tied to the Adobe ID. You would have to register your PC en e-reader to your friend's Adobe ID, which means that you would not be able to use an Adobe ID of your own.

Sharing books this way is legal, but B&N's DRM is only one that makes sharing books this way easy.

Remember that there is no guarantee that these workarounds will keep on working

Happy reading!

Hiya geertm,

Thanks very much for the tips

I tried the above but the problem appears to be my Aussie credit card. Currently working with the Kobo helpdesk to try and sort this out.

Cheers,
Vic

Read the user agreement on the Kobo Books site, before spoofing an address. You can violate it, but they can suspend or terminate your account.

So... hiding your country of residence is more legal than pirating?

I'm not sure that that hiding your address is illegal at all. It may breach terms of use at particular ebook stores and entitle them to terminate/suspend your account, but under Australian law I don't think it is illegal to import ebooks from overseas. As everyone points out, Amazon et al are more than willing to ship hard copies of books here.........

I think this link http://bookbee.com.au/blog/2010/03/1...-rort-at-will/ sums it up nicely.
